Prazi beam cutters are a high priced tool, if one needs on this is a cheap alternative. Timber framers use this type of saw, I may get one someday just for the heck of it.
Yes, they have a large base plate that allows you to make accurate cuts at all angles. Much better control and finish than free handing with a chain saw.
First started seeing these Prazi beam cutters for Skil model 77 worm drive saw back in mid '90's.Soon afterwards available for conventional models.Mainly timber framers & those working with large dimension beams like them,but woodturners/sculptors have made them popular also.They really excel at cutting large tenons,half laps & other joints. Cant believe I don't have one in my arsenal by now already....
I've seen one on the job. It never ran while I was there but it sure was cool to look at. The crew I was with also does timber frame construction. They also had a jig that made pegs on site from scrap oak. Cool stuff!
