Been wondering why Giz has been sniffin' like a Hoover vac every morning... I saw "something" down by the run off drain pipe about a week ago, but thought it was the neighbor's cat ... this morning, same exact spot, 3 very healthy raccoons were getting a drink. They heard us on the deck and boogied down into the woods. First time with coons here. Would just soon not have Giz try to tangle with 1 much less 3... She never even made a peep while she watched them... still can't believe it.
Yeah, that's my big concern around here too. I'd rather the dogs not get into it with much of anything other than a trash bag. Don't need no dang Vet bills. Casper found a nice, slow moving, porkypine a while back that he thought should be sniffed. Luckily, I happened to turn around to see the porky also turning around and called Casper to leave it. Close call, and the animal waddled off into the woods.
Nice of you to "re-locate" them. If the 3 stooges here are dumb enough to keep coming back... might have to cure the habit.
I've been lucky not to have had any issues with my dogs getting pricked by a porkie. Coons, as long as they stay away from the house and pets, and don't trash surf I don't have a problem with them. The wife feeds the rabbits in the yard. Any greens or veggie scraps go to that use. Now last year, late on a summer day, we had a fox hauling butt across our yard. It came within 15 feet of us by the garden. He had a rabbit in his mouth. The wife was mortified. I told her it's the circle of life. I think she's still bothered by that. Oh well.
Love our fox. Even though he certainly picks off some of our chickens, his main diet is mice and other vermin. We have bad Lyme disease here,so any thing that kills mice is our friend.
That's what he does with them Dennis. That way they don't stink the area no where they were taken from. They tend to crawl in places and stink where they end up, and it's easier to catch, then "relocate" them. . That's how I'd do it.

I've never seen any kind of trap that would be hard for a dog (Giz is about the same size as a rocky) to get in trouble with... how do these "dog safe" traps work, and still grab a coon?
im not smart enough to post a picture but you can look up dog proof coon trap , it looks like a small juice can and the trigger is in the bottom and unlike a regular trap where you push down on the pan to set it off these type of traps go off when the coon pulls the bait up and that sets it off. so even a dog that could fit in a paw would not be able to pull up on the bait.of course you need to fasten the chain to something and most have a spike to stick in the ground ,no need to worry about hiding it ( unless from people )the bait smell and their curious nature will do the job.
