Ok, I needed more fill, and my concrete guy wanted some crushed rock. So now I have the gravel pile (pictured above) and this rock pile. Should I put down the gravel and then the rock on top of that, layering and compacting as I build the gravel and then the rock up? He was vague.

Generally you start with the bigger stuff and put the smaller stuff on top...the smaller stuff will work its way down in and lock it all together as it gets compacted...works really well.

Unless your pics are not loading properly for me, they are a little vague also.
(All I see is a tight close up of the crushed stone and a tiny bit of grass)

Me, vague?! Concrete guy was concerned about water from above (up slope) getting under the slab and leading to heaving. He has a plate compactor, so I’m good there. Work is slowed down due to unexpected trips to Maine on weekends for a while to help family. In the good news category, the sawmill said my framing lumber is ready.

Don't put sand on top of the stone or it will settle. We usually fill with clean sand and compact every 6". Unless there is heavy clay. Then we'd fill with stone to drain the water quicker.

I would go with one or the other not mix them. I would also go with what you are calling the rock pile it will compact and lock together better also drain if need be. IF I am following your pictures.

Life took a hard turn in mid September, and the outside concrete work was stopped in it’s tracks and the electrical conduit capped for the winter. We did pour 3yd in the basement in order to be able to use the oil furnace, and were able to combine that with 2 other neighbors’ pours, which avoided a small load surcharge. Things have stabilized with family in Maine, and this Spring I expect to be back at it.

Hours of work and hundreds of dollars later, and the Mrs will say the best thing is the dog doesn’t come back up with dirty paws!
