I think you're right, if I remember Rotax were sleeved, Hirth is plated.

Now I know why some people prefer to order online. I have to pay a freight charge of $4.50 just so I can drive to the dealer? He had forgotten about adding it until I said I wanted a set of fuel lines. I will do my best to support local businesses but man, do some make it hard!

Order of following items is for the 362.

    2 rings

A crank seal for both sides

2 stop buffers (both saws need it) part of AV system.

2 Sections of fuel line both in the tank and from tank to carb.

I actually like using a ball hone on cylinders I have ported because is rounds out the edges of the ports. I know some people are afraid it will chip the edges but if you use some oil on the hone and go slow and easy I have never chipped one yet. I have seen the crazy Monkeys video but I like the results I get with a ball hone better. See what I mean. Pros and Cons.

2 local Stihl dealers charge frieght on everything; the other 2 don't if you don't mind waiting a few days so your order ships with standatd store stock. You may ask if they will do the same for you.

    Re: your piston question.

Many saw guys simply put in a new piston if there was any excessive wear on either exhaust or intake side. With the recent drop of oem and meteor making a fine piston, it's not too far off from a new set of rings. If piston is nla or pricey, it gets re-ringed.

For me? If machine marks still exist with no scoring, I'll put on new rings (oem or caber). If the piston is worn, new piston (meteor usually... $40 for most pro Stihl's).

    Re: save-a-thread

I've done one of these so far. Take your time with the tap and use a good quality sealant around it. I used Dirko I think---Dont go too far into the combustion chamber ( pay attention) and give the end a good whack with the provided tool. The saw is running but doesn't get worked hard (not mine).

Freight is a biggie, expense wise for a dealer. It all depends on how he orders parts. Most manufacturers have a minimum order or there is a surcharge, free freight is a rarity these days, so it often gets passed to the customer.

I have a dealer here that charges shipping. I even asked the parts guys about and they said Stihl charges shipping. I have dealt with some other dealers and they have never charged shipping if it comes on a regular stock order. If I order something big I go to a dealer that does not charge shipping. If it is something small I get it at the dealer that charges shipping since it is not worth the drive to another dealer. They charged me $2 to ship in tank vents for an 018. Here is what a tank vent looks like. NEW OEM STIHL Chainsaw Fuel Gas Tank Vent Valve 017 018 019 MS 170 180 C 191 T | eBay Then one time they tried to charge me shipping twice.

They charged shipping for a duck bill valve. Was it the cost of a postage stamp I hope.

That's an important point, if you don't need the widget yesterday, ask about having it ordered on their next regular stock order and if that would eliminate any freight charges....

I'm guessing since it won't be here for a week it's going on their stock order. There is another dealer 10 miles further that said they could have it in one or two days.

We've got a few saws to work on, I'm not in a hurry. Heck the ground here is so muddy there's not much to do in the way of firewood. Other than burn it and even that is slow with the temps were having.

It all depends on how much they have to order. If they don't make the minimum, the surcharge makes it prohibitive to order stuff. So a low volume dealer would likely order weekly rather than daily. Stihl was always 1-2 days for us and we certainly moved enough to order every day. Different circumstances for the little guys I'm sure, some mfrs make it tougher for them.

This guy has quite a bit of inventory, but everytime I've stopped in for something there is nobody else there.

The one dealer claims they still have to charge freight. They are a pretty high volume dealer for parts. They have 2 guys at the lawn and garden counter that stay busy. They are usually a little more money on the parts too.

The other dealer on the other side of town has a mechanic that doubles as the parts guy. They problem with him is he no hablo English at times. They have never charged shipping.

I really like my stihl products but I am getting tired of getting ripped of on parts. Stihl parts prices are through the roof compared to husky. An air filter for an 026 is $20. An air filtter for car usually does not cost that much and they are 15-20x times the size. I've been trying to boycott Stihl parts when possible. This week I had to get a fuel like for my 036 though. I'm not trusting Chinese rubber.

I found it lol. $1.25 to ship the tank vents(2) that cost $1.65 each.

Good call on the fuel line. Of all the aftermarket parts I've tried, none have been more problematic than fuel lines and filters.

I hear ya on the pricing. In my experience, it's common for the freight charges to get tacked onto every parts sale as a matter of policy. Squeak a little and it's the first thing to get dropped off the invoice. ;)

Should be fine. Double check the directions, though. Im not sure if it's more of an adhesive need or to ensure no leaks. Probably both?
