Sometimes the small details matter. Echo uses a plate to cover up all the nooks and crannies that fines and bar oil normally collect in. My other inboard clutch saw doesn't have anything like that and will fill up with crap if you don't regularly clean it. Its not an echo...That plate in the echo 501p probably acts as a heat shield as well if some ham fisted operator turns the clutch blue.

Echos seem to be simple, well designed saws.

I concur. They dropped the ball on the air filter on the 501p / 4910 but I've seen worse designs on other brands.

I am a fan of most Japanese engineering. Seems to me that quality is as important to them as profit margins are in many cases. That's how it should be if I were writing the book.

I tend to agree with your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks fellas. That saw was used commercially by Brad Barcroft and as his firewood saw. Still has very stout compression. I like the black on orange look.

Looks like you are the guy to fix up my Echo CS680 for a raffle fund raiser for FHC when they decide they need it. Interested?

After having forget to dye the filter cover on the 501p, I decided to do that today.
