Contrast it with this - OK not free, but not a rip off merchant either. Just wants it done.

Approx 1000 cubic metres apple cordwood Kent
Anybody interested? I estimate there to be over 1000 cu m of wood here. The trees were grubbed out last February and are now being cut up, should all be cut by early Feb. Large butts for apple, approx 12-15 inch diameter and 7-9 feet in length, plus mixture of good size boughs. Not gun barrel straight but not ridiculously twisty either. Can be stacked at roadside as soon as the land is dry enough! Located a few miles south of Maidstone, Kent. Offers invited for the whole lot or by the lorry load. I would imagine bulkers would be more suitable than timber trailers - I can load if given enough notice. Whole lot must be gone by April at the latest.

Looks reasonable, he's loading. What's a bulker? A dump truck or trailer?

I've been to Maidstone/West Malling a few times for work. Nice countryside.

All this is why I'll drive an hour or so for wood. The DC metro scrounges are usually stacked rounds of good wood and I normally get loaded or at minimum, help loading by the homeowner trying to get rid of the rounds. It's worth 50 bucks in fuel for me to enjoy a day and meet some nice people rather than dealing with a clown like this cleaning up his mess.

I've had really good luck doing what I'm doing so I'm not gonna change it up..

I still like my deal the best - tree service contact places an ad on CL with no phone number or pics that states what kind of tree (s) they just dropped the afternoon before or in past hour,I call his cell phone, within 30 minutes its dumped in my driveway with no brush or hassles. :dex:

They don't have to come sweep up your driveway after you process it?

"Wow, that looks like a primo load of firewood! When can I come by and pick it up? Maybe when I'm there I can take care of your recycling. Or feed the cat? I'm so excited. Email me pronto! Tootles!"

I know this seems like a slave for free deal but to some it may be what others are looking for. Trees are already dropped and in sections/pieces and most of the brush gone. There was a time we would have gone for it and if someone is willing to work, it IS a way to bring in some income....LEGALLY so more power to them. It takes a while and some equipment to get established. We all started somewhere. I'd bet if a person with a truck or trailer and saw would do what they say he'd work with them.

When we started burning over 40 years ago, We were trying to get ahead so everything could dry a few years.Dad and his friend cut together and I was clean up and hatchet/limbing crew. They did it on the halves and worked well. We had everything dead cut from our normal spots and was looking for future stash. dad's friend heard his neighbor was closing his apple farm down and was clearing it out. They agreed to cut the trees, burn the brush and stack the owners wood in his barn and he was to help. !/2 to owner, 1/4 to dad and 1/4 to friend. Owner helped once but did let us use his tractor. Dad kept hauling his out but friend said he'd leave it there and get it as he had time which owner said was fine. 3 months later all the friends wood was gone and owner had decided he needed that too. Bottom line he never got his wood and dad ended p halving his 1/4. Live and learn and we vowed never again.

Learned a lot over the years and now turn down wood and pass info along to others. Word of mouth on how you treat people gets around and people will call you once they hear. At least for us that is how it goes.

Bottom line is most tree services make more per hour doing jobs than messing with firewood.
