Hey gang, Today after Breakfast I was scanning the tools on Craigslist and saw this Coleman generator, it said $50.00 I thought it was a mistake so I got a hold of the fella and he said, "nope" it's $50.00 and only because we haven't heard it run since 1992. He said his Father passed away last year and they were doing a garage cleanup, it has never left the garage since new. I said, ok I'll come look at it. It was in pristine condition other than the frame rusting a bit from ocean air. It had "Great compression" but no gas at all in the tank, not a drop!!! That scared me a bit "But" I gave the man $50.00 and dragged it home... Taking a chance, I sucked out all the old oil and put in fresh, added a couple caps of marvel mystery oil to the tank and some fresh gas, a little gas in the carb and it "Fired up" on the fourth pull!!! . It's only downfall is, it's as noisy as a small locomotive. It's 4000 watts and it ran like a banshee. After I let it run for 10 min I checked all the outlets and she has plenty of power. I took a chance and "this time" I didn't get burned...
Actually yes! And I'll use it for lights in the evening for cutting this fall! I have some big halogen work lights I'll bring with me.
Dad has similar from mid 80, will run lights and skill saw and compressor but not staple guns which require 20 amps.. In short great for camp garage build!!
couldn't pass it up for $50.00 Lyle! It'll come in handy, I'm just gonna engineer a "much quieter" muffler assembly on it. I already have some ideas, Dam thing is really loud!
Yup Dave So is mine. Loud,, not your pea shooter or fireworks loud. but you can't talk to someone when its running..
A small automotive muffler welded horizontal on that outlet pipe with a bracket works wonders on those B & S Motors. Lawn tractor muffler also works, just a bit of fab work. Nice find WeldrDave !
Great shape and great deal. Nice find. Looks like you could easily modify and add a better muffler to reduce the noise.
I see something under that rusty frame which is holding that beauty off the ground.....do you see it WeldrDave
Wait! I can make it out now..... ”¥OU $UCK!” Super sweet find Dave You could use your FT as part of a noise suppressing regimen.... just walk right up to that new found machine wearing only your FT and I guarantee the thing will shut up....
Ok, this morning I had my coffee and then the cog kicked into gear. You know those things we "Never throw away"? We might use some day... Well, I had remembered about two years ago I put a new performance exhaust on my Daughters ATV and kept the old muffler... so what did I do,..... 2 hours later and a $1.60 for a 1-1/8" muffler clamp I was in business!!!! I had all the extra pipe and the things from my gas stove installation, it was like Christmas. And, I can say I believe it knocked the noise in half. It's at least tolerable from a couple feet away. I just got to make sure the cords are plugged in before running it, But it worked perfect.
Great Dave! Have to tell you I made our neighbor happy yesterday when I offered him our old generator (Coleman) for $100. Could have gotten more but he is in need and doesn't have much on the dollar side right now. He's also going to do a little work on our atv to help me out. I feel good about it.
Thats awesome Dennis, having a generator regardless of size helps a lot when power is out. I actually have 3 now and one is my welding machine but acts as house backup when power goes. This one I just got will be put to real good use on the new land soon enough.
