Called and ordered my Thermguard today, and yes he did give a discount for mentioning being on a pellet forum. Doubt I will need it this year, but looking forward to getting it installed and configured for peace of mind.

It's possible it has automatic circulation, but I've never seen on of those. At least check.

It isn't the temp of the house, but where the pipes run when not in the room. If they run along the sill (as mine do), they can get mighty cold even with insulation. If the basement is finished, the temps behind sheetrock can be dramatically different from what the air temp is. If pipes run thru a crawl space instead - they would be even more chilled. I have pipes that run thru the garage and even though the garage is under the house, in frigid weather it can easily get to just above 0* in there.

This year I have only run the ThermGuard for about 4 days total. Last year it was a month running. Better to be safe than find out the hard way (burst pipe) that there is an issue.

remember also that if you have Taco zone valves that run your zones, they take a couple of minutes to open fully. you also should never manually open the valves without first disconnecting the wiring.

and ALWAYS keep a spare Taco head handy - they go bad at the worst moments!

    end of public service announcement:D

We ran all our water pipes out side the sheet rock. We just put the base boards out further with the pipes (all pec's) behind it. So in all cases, there are insulated walls between the pipes and the external walls, be they wood or cement. Some are in the ceiling between upstairs and down. None in the attic.

Who turned this to a food thread :D? I have no idea what a Taco zone valve is. Probably never seen one either. Pretty damm sure I don't have one since everything is on one zone in my house.

Pronounced tay-co around here. They are water circulation parts. Moves water to different areas, one pump per zone/thermostat....

just to clarify this a little. if you have more than one zone of hot water baseboard or hydro/air, then you either have a pump for each zone, or a single pump and multiple Taco zone valves. if any zone calls for heat, the zone valve opens and the pump starts.
if you have only one zone, then there is a back flow preventer to prevent the thermo-syphon action (cold water settling hot rising) action. sometimes they can get stuck.

Yep, at my previous abode we had 3 zones and one pump.

2 zones with separate pumps here. When the system was designed, I wanted to ensure heat would continue in half the house if I lost one of the pumps.

Pete, it just came in the mail yesterday. I am surprised at how small it is! Don't know why but I was expecting it to be much bigger. Anyway, a new toy to play with this weekend!

Once you get it programmed to what you need, it's so easy to use. Cold weather starts, you just push the switch....done!

    Weather gets warmer, switch off!

I just remembered to turn mine off Wednesday. Still that means it has only run things for around 6 days this year - a pittance compared to last year.
