Down here it is a very damp 40 degrees with some honey locust in the stove. On deck is some two year seasoned red oak. Heating with wood is a way of life that few appreciate.
31, just now realized it's gonna get down to 18 tonight. Loaded up on oak with the air shut down for a 24hr burn. Might have to rethink that. I let the stove go out earlier and shoveled out about 10lbs of staples and nails. Gotta remember this pail goes to the dump, not spread in the woods.
Sitting at -16 C feels -27 C, or 4 F feels -16 F. The wind is reported to be 19 mph with gusts to 29 mph, but I think it's closer to the gusting speed. Did I mention the wind? Starting to remember why I used to
-20c/-4f currently. As is always the overnight burn of larch was loaded a short while ago. The house is nice and toasty before bed from loading the stove through the day with lodgepole pine.
Well 2 weeks later and temps going down to about 24F tonight. I loaded a fire up with birch, western red cedar and probably some pine earlier, now that’s just coaled up and I reloaded with a bit of birch and some oak pallet squarewood. Not filling this beast up tonight. Just want to be able to churn out a coal fire in the morning. Hopefully this will do the job. We’re on a bit of a mild trend. It’s semi-warm with the sun out but cold winds. Just cold at night as usual.
Hi FatBoy85 are you still doing daily burns? Im assuming yes since the coast has had long wet spells this year that are close to record breaking. That stove must be a god send for chasing the damp out of the bones and house.
Hey there. Sean, yes and no. Last night I had a fire but I found the temp inside to be quite comfortable to not rebuild it in the AM. I got back from a late excursion to the house being at mid 50’s tonight so yes fire. The solar gain is so so, it can be blowing and it’s only a matter of time until the house temp drops. Thing is I’m not often building fires in the day as I’m often gone. Its much easier to get my temps up with a fire during the sun-down part of the day than it is in the morning. Less overheating. The stove: It’s been indeed a comfort!!Although something seems to be lacking in my wood. I believe the outside humidity which has hovered well above 80% for the past 2 months has given the wood a moisture patch to it. Some of my cottonwood that was stacked in full sun in the summertime for at least 3 months solid has now infested with fungus !!! It is almost like holding a wet fresh split. I don’t burn that stuff. But its so odd when I come upon it. Multiple areas in my yard have this complex. Even my splitting rounds have some. More on this later I need to sleep but I think it has to do with the stack formation..

18 here, you called it Mwalsh9152 ! Lit the stove with a hodgepodge of stuff. Now that it's going it's Hard Maple and Oak for our heat enjoyment this morning. The house was down to 50 ish since we only had a daytime fire yesterday. But we'll bring that temp right up.
