Its -29c/-20f right now in the Rockies. Ive got the coals raked forward in anticipation of a belly full of larch. Coldest spot in Canada today was a place in NWT at -48.4c/-55f.
- 1 f here..79 f inside....no complaints with the Fisher...burning Hard Maple, some Ash and Black Cherry.
Minus -15° this morning without the wind chill, man this is getting old. Haven't heard my oil furnace run so much in the last 13 years since I've been here. The old farm house is showing me more drafts every day. The woodstove is cranking 24/7 but just hasn't been able to keep up with these constant negative temperatures and wind. Ugh
I'm with you on that, I keep chucking wood in the stove, the thermostats are set at 67/68° (natural gas boiler), and the boiler's running most of the time. No way the woodstove is keeping up with this cold.
-12 here this morning. I slept in a bit. Pine and Ash going right now to be followed by Ash and Pine.
Someone fell asleep and forgot to load the stove last night, but we stayed warm enough on the white birch coals in the bottom. Went out and pushed the 4” of white stuff around we got last night, did our driveway and the neighbors just because all before it got light out. The old Super C took two tries getting going this morning guess the oil is a bit tick even the governor weights were glued together for a while had to let her warm up
Another cold day. I thought it was New Years not April fools Mother Nature? Gonn keep choochin with oak and let the sun in again today. Not much happening outside again. My youngest's 3rd birthday today so were having a small get together with grandpa, grandma, and uncle. Then they are staying the night to spend time with my brother from Michigan. The wife and I are going to brave the cold and hit the town with some neighbor friends this evening to ring in the new year. Stay warm you all!
When I got up about 1 1/2 Hour go it was 5 F outside... about that time the clouds moved away... We are currently at 0 F and a wind chill at -17 F... talk about tanking... ... But Its currently 71 F inside and getting a few coals burned down....
My Central Boiler is a CL-40 with what they called a cyclone side draft. I heat my 2576 sq. ft. 200+year old house with Water to Air Heat exchanger and DHW no storage. Boiler is 90' from house. If I wait until there is just a bed of coals (sometimes I have to rake things around) then stack the wood in the firebox all the way to the top of the door I can get 24hr burn. The species of wood makes a big difference the Hard Maple, Hickory and Oak are the better woods. When I used to burn green or semi seasoned wood I would not have the bed of coals just ash but with seasoned dry wood it burns better. I keep the thermostat at 70*F . -2*F this morning doesn't look like it is going to warm up much today at least the Sun is shining. Will check the OWB in a while and add wood if necessary
Toasty 8 c in the uk but fires still roaring away ( mopped floor so it needs drying ) Not sure if this is normal but when we had fire installed my first bit of cherry I cut and split to fit in a cast iron display grate. Looked a bit dull so iv just washed my splits so they can go back They must have shrunk over 40% and have a reading of 0 % Think I might varnish them later.
currently 9 here with a wind chill advisory 73 inside burning oak. just surviving and staying warm here.
Later start this morning, but currently -14 with a feel of -39. Think I'll hold off just a bit longer before I shovel the driveway this morning! The good news, the snow stopped last evening just around 11:00-11:30. There was a State Cop helping someone out of the snowbank last evening on the way home; before I got there to lend a hand, he already had her pushed out. (Just down the street from us) So I ended up shoveling the deck and paths by moonlight a little after 11:00 and enjoyed the quiet peacefulness of the moment!
Most everyone had a very mild fall and even into December it was above normal in temperatures. Our cold started here on 12/7 with our first below normal day. Since that day we've had 6 days of above normal temperatures and 18 days of below normal temperatures. Many of them way below normal! As for the forecast, there is no relief in sight so the stretch of below normal will continue. All in all, if this continues through February this may turn out to be a record setting winter for many of us. And now we are about to begin January and for many that turns out to be a very snowy month. Then there will be the big storms of the late winter and early spring to contend with. So 2018 may end up to be quite the year in weather news.
I'm with you Cold Trigger Finger . Sleds are the bomb as long as you have even an inch of snow. I use this one behind the ATV, and my wife got me a smaller one for home use that I pull with manpower.
