It's supposed to drop temps tonight. 28° now, going down to 13°. Pine in the stove now, beech will be going in around 11pm Our snow "event" was postponed to later in the week. The only event was the slick roads this am from the first snow event scheduled for today that happened during and before the am commute.
Yesterday I had my first fire of the season. MMMMM New refractory in the Wood Gun & about 10 hours to bring up the shop slab to 60*. We're at 17* but a bunch of teens for the highs this week are forecasted.
28 this morning with a fine wet snow coming down. Dropped 2-4” last night depending on where you stand. Same thing with the forecasts here it’s the end of the world!!! It freaks people out and there’s cars in the weeds all over. I guess people forget that frozen stuff can be slippery..... Oh yeah 70 inside with some old semi Punky poplar and maple going. Trying to get it burned up
I am going to burn a true mixed bag today of ash, beech, mulberry, cherry, and walnut. This is my left over stack from last year. I've been burning mostly all walnut and I'm getting tired of sweeping the mess and cleaning the ashes constantly. Looking forward to some of my cleaner woods.
Mid 20's, a little freezing rain has the schoolhouse delayed 2 hours. Stove is burning all Ash. Temps into the low teens tonight..
Joe, I think the biggest problem is that people are still creatures of habit. They drive too fast and especially depend a lot on their brakes in the months without snow. Then come snow, habits still prevail and cars are not meant to be driven like that on slippery roads. Shoot, just look at what happens in a big rainstorm! If it happens in summer, doubly so in winter.
Made it down to 2 this morning before making it to 8 at the moment headed to 19. Threw a load in for the misses before heading off to work, as she is working from home with a sick little. Should be about 72-73 upstairs right now.
Its currently 46* and super cloudy, very grey day without a hint of sun all day. A major front is pushing in, its going to be wind chill of high single digits to the teens tonight with tomorrows high being 30* or so. The stoves cold right now, and I just gave it a good scrubbing. I put in a few maple splits to get it fired up quick around 5pm.. However in honor of the extreme temps, tonight Im doing something most people dont get a chance to experience. Im loading 100% Beech. We have tons of it here on the coastal plains, and its harder and higher in BTU's than white oak even. This beech is 2yrs seasoned, though 1yr is all that it really needs. It'll be cool watching those secondaries light up tonight at 8pm when I turn down the damper, and even cooler when I reload it at 8am when I leave for work and the fans still going and the stove is full of super hot coals.. Love me some Beech!!
25 this morning and 28 here now, and freezing rain. We got an inch of snow this am and then it was supposed to to turn to rain but the temps are staying down. Elm & Hard Maple on the menu right now, small chunks.
Nice to meet you Ejp1234 we have a lot of Beech up here in the north country as well, it's a major component of the woods. Glad to hear you've got some to burn. But do think White Oak tips the scales with a little bit more BTU's though. Either way, enjoy that fire.
Maybe. What I do know is that whenever people are talking about snow in the forecast, if I just say that 'I heard 12 inches to a foot', it always starts an argument and it is nothing short of hysterical. Try it on the next snow forecast- just say those words with no inflection whatsoever and watch the crowd go wild. This one time, in banned camp, I was walking next to the owner of the company I was working for and we were moving through the supervisor's office. It was a 'bullpen' office with 12 divided cubicles and a common walkway down the middle. I stop and say to the owner "Watch this.". I call over to the guy furthest away, 'Hey Charlie, how far is it to Chicago from here..... by car?'. He says whatever he said (it does not matter) in miles. Someone else responds that it is two days' driving. Someone else says 'Your butt, it is only one day'. Then someone says that they know someone who lives two counties closer to Chicago and there is no way it can be driven in one day. And on and on until they are all arguing and the entire office is paralyzed. The owner looks at me and says 'OK, it IS funny but please, don't do that anymore'. The moral of the story is that sabotage is always easier than making things run smoothly. There is only one way to make things work correctly but an infinite number of ways to have it fail; for example, I give you the fuel for a chainsaw. It has to be gasoline, or very close to it (naphtha <may> work but not nearly as well) and MUST contain some appropriate oil. But the list of things that will not work is endless..... such as Bacon Bits, for example. Or Bacon Bits mixed with kitty litter (new or used, makes no difference). How about old shoes cut up into little pieces? Nope, won't work. See what I mean? Fun is where you find it..... and I find it everywhere. What is more surprising is that so very many people seem willing to step up and help me on that mission..... Brian
Finally made it to 10f today! feels like 3, but its 10 out there now. Gonna get some more snow but they'll come in heavy bursts (squalls) in a couple hours or so, I guess. Chilled today, gonna have to start a fire in the kicker stove this evening. EDIT feels like 0, not 3.
Every chart shows white oak as 24mil btu's per cord. Beech varies per chart, 24-27.5mil btu's per cord, but never under 24... Depending on the chart, its either the same or better.
Gloomy as heck but sitting at +4 C (about 39 F). If we're not breaking a record for warm today, we're close. No poplar in the stove, no hum of the oil burner, she's 56 F inside while I pull more meat off the deer. Rib meat/scooby snacks cooking up for the dawgs.
We put in a "ductless mini split(s)" heat pump, mainly for a/c. They make nice heat. We also have oil backup for the radiant in floor heat. All of that is off now for the season, and every year the first shower evening shower with "homemade" hot water is somehow much better.
