Heat of the suns rays are the difference. Nothing like spring time ice fishing. They don’t cancel school until the toilets freeze. They don’t cancel hockey games till -40*. Rink is in an uninsulated, unheated rink.

Never mind my ugly white legs they haven't seen sunlight for months, they should get some colour back in them by the weekend.

Kicked up a few driving, but I was more checking for super crossings. I sat for an hour before last light and one came out and went the wrong way. I saw him while driving out, and hope I see him again. Big body but not sure on the antlers.

How cold does it have to be before your other heat kicks in? It looks like you are running two stoves? I cant blame you in those temps.

That’s inside and outside temps. I have a forced air oil furnace that is turned off. I have one Blaze king in the house and one in the garage. That temp is from one stove.

Its nice to see the contrast eh? My outside one is in my dogs kennel and the other one is in the center of my downstairs about 25 feet from the wood stove. your temps are impressive without using other means of heat. Soft wood can do the trick in any climate it just doesnt last as long unless you own a blaze king... Nice pics of the grey checked wood. That load will give off some great heat.

Our wood has crazy tight grain and last damm long. At this temp a loaded stove will last 10 or so hours. 67 rings. A2ED3F2A-E679-45D4-93C4-82CF2F8C5463.jpeg 829F1EDA-889F-4C4D-9BEC-9DE8FD5B28FA.jpeg

Those are nice tight growth rings. Thats probably why btu charts are just a guide and only good for the regions they are tested in. Your spruce is likely nothing like that of the spruce here. I will only get about 5 hours burn time from spruce in my region but it will burn hot and this is in a long burning non cat stove. Ive harvested a bunch of doug fir that I took out of the sub alpine that is heavy even when it hits below 20% mc, they are often smallish trees as you would expect. I attribute these factors to the slow growing season at the higher elevations.

Agreed, there are most likely many reasons. I always wondered what effect the cold soil has. Short growing season must have effect as well.

It was -24 @ 11 pm here. I'll check the overnight low when I get up. The Aurora was really getting with it tonight.

40 when I went to bed, 26 and very windy now. Headed for 28 for the high. Loaded a load N/S last night for something different than the same old same old E/W loading. I forgot how much of a difference it makes in heating! Still at 73 in here this morning to my surprise. Out of the same ash and boxelder mix. I was expecting 69-70 per usual. Heading for 15 tonight so will probably rinse and repeat last nights load.

30 degrees out back in shade, 40 degrees out front in the sun. Burning Pine in the boiler. Full sun and warming up fast! Hopefully it gets to 50 today!
