30.8°F here, snowing, like Canadian border VT. Pushed some uglies in the stove, keeping the place warm. Wanted to finish splitting the rounds still in the truck, but my shoulder is sore, so I'll wait.

Yes Sean, Anyone here on the forum who has dealt with it say's the "EXACT" same thing!!! When you get a Gum tree, you cut it up and keep what will fit in your stove or Fireplace round and give the rest to the dump unless you have a "MIGHTY" big slitter, because even the 27 ton has problems! It's just not worth the aggravation trying. It does burn well though!!!

I cant believe how stringy it is! I guess if you have lots of other options you can pass on this stuff.

Yes, but it's great burning wood! If you happen to be scrounging and come across it, I'll take as much as I can get "AS LONG" as I don't have to split it! :picard:

I don't think you have any of that in your area!!! It's mainly a southern US tree.

leoht some of those who post tend to post pictures of the gum splitting they split shortly after getting it. Some others tend to wait and let it dry out quite a bunch and some wait until its frozen then its time to split it. Depends on who you talk to. But rough enough.

It can. My neighbor has one in her yard that has a 30" trunk. As per your post to leoht, "NOTHING" you do, how long you wait, dry, wet, etc does not help gum!!! Trust me, after burning for nearly 40 years, I split very little bit of gum.
