Wow. I just looked at this chart. I did not realize Beech had so much heat in it! http://forestry.usu.edu/htm/forest-products/wood-heating
No, but it's our biggest tree with the highest btu, this is our highest btu tree on our property, just a smaller tree. http://ohiodnr.com/forestry/trees/hophorn_am/tabid/5377/Default.aspx
Hmmm. I had an apple tree get damaged in the ice storm, and before that I had to cut prolly 25-30% of it away due to the fact that there were so many apples the branches were breaking off. On that note, I had a couple of people tell me last summer if you get a bumper crop of apples, look out for the coming winter. Should be a "real" winter. Man were they right! Anywho, I just noticed on that chart I was looking at, how many BTUs apple has. I never would have thought that! I will be cutting that up and saving it for the coldest nights next January/February.
I'll be cutting some wood this summer for sugaring, just need to setup some type of evaporator. Just too many trees sitting around with sap waiting to be tapped. We might do some this year.
I also want to plant a bunch more apple trees on the property. Spread them out in different areas and take care of them. Think I will put a few in this year.
The second pic is from AccuWeather, we'll see some further updates coming up. The first pic is the brook, just down to the right of the picture (not shown) is a dead Hemlock that came down from the ice storm, I'll save this work for a HOT day this summer unless the ice takes it out. The brook picture almost looks like I took it with the phone.
33 outside now,36 for the high today.76 in here still even after letting fire go out a few hours ago. That brick wall surround holds the heat in lets it out gradually.
We are heading back down in temperatures now. 32 or so at this time. Suppose to gradually keep going back down to this winter's normal. Large splits of White Ash going in the boiler.
Just loaded up with Cherry, we're sitting at 32.9. Depending on the wind tomorrow, I might try cutting some topped off Pine on the property around the house. At the moment we still have enough snow on the house property that I can use the sled with the Moose Cargo Tub.
Current temp. is 29 going down to 21. The Encore is loaded with 3 fat splits of black locust and a medium red oak to light the BL. It is making ghost flames every 5 seconds, the cat is hot and it will do this all night. No propane will be used and I just unstuck my T-shirt from my sweaty beer belly. Burning wood is just friggin' awesome I tell ya.
Warm here today. About 30 this morning. Ice all over the place. Roads are slick in areas. Black ice in places. Take it slow. It was difficult to even walk to the camp last night. The Ash and a little Maple is burning in the boiler.
We are having decent warm up here too. Going to be in the 30s this week, I only have oak and mulberry up at the house right now but if I get some time today I will be bringing up some silver maple. Currently have some shorter oak splits burning.
25 this morning, just loaded up with Sugar Maple. It looks like we're in for another cold week so we'll be pushing in some wood for this week.
Carried in some black birch that has a little to a lot of punk. Good enough for a 40 degree day. It was standing dead and came to me bucked up. All I had to do was split and stack. An interesting read on black birch==>. http://northernwoodlands.org/articles/article/black_birch_betula_lenta
Cool. Thanks for the link. I actually bought that magazine at a store not that long ago and subscribed to it afterwards. If I remember correctly it is only a bi-monthly or maybe quarterly magazine. I like it though. I'll bet thewoodlands and many others would like it as well.
Cooling down around here again. Down to about 17° on the back porch this morning. Some Ash and a little Pine cookin in the boiler.
