Elm's good stuff. Some people won't mess with it because it's a pita to split, but with hydro's, it's no issue.

We definitely have a good selection of wood around here, which is maybe why some don't mess with elm?

It's easy for me to get, so I'll take it. If it was difficult to get down and out of the woods, I wouldn't bother and let the morels make the most out of the elm. Although as poorly as elm rots, I think the morels get most of their nutrients from the elm bark that falls off well before the tree falls.

    That's my theory at least.;)

I think its neat that you make your own hot water from wood. Probably normal for lots of folks here but just saying.

37 degrees; burning soft maple. Nice and toasty. Didn't realize I had this much maple in my pile this year. Guess I did cut up quite a bit of it several years ago.

Yeah with a splitter it doesnt matter much. Even though I burn mostly softwoods it doesnt matter much to me how many knots are in it since my splitter goes through everything I put in front of it. I see on chimney sweeps btu chart elm comes in at 19 mbtus.. Around here thats about where our best woods are (larch and birch) I can see why you would want it especially considering its fairly easy for you to get.

Yep its cold here. Deceiving, not driving winds blowing snow and sand sideways and 15' snowdrifts, but WOW, the constant breeze here is a wicked wind chill.

36 on the back porch this morning. This is a mix of wood burning day. Pine cut offs from barn in now mixed with small Ash, Maple, and Elm splits. I bought some wood this year and ended up with a good mix. To include some Oak! I don't usually have much of that, if any. I'll save most of the Oak for January and February.:fire:

No fire this morning, but house was semi cool after work, so loaded a split or two of pine. Sleet storm pushed through, it's now snowing with an inch expected.

Well gentlemen and ladies, I don't post much, but it is setting at 36° outside and the boiler is loaded with pine, ash and some beech. It's a balmy 73° inside and all of the hot water we can use. For a few years we also dried the clothes off from the boiler, but the wife wanted to dry them a little quicker than it was doing, so I got her an electric dryer.
