99 heard the peepers on Sun afternoon. My damaged ole ears didn't pick them up. But she still swears that she can't hear partridge drumming, so I guess that part evens out! There are only a few snow spots left in the yard. We have been cleaning/raking as it melts and that is a good feeling to know you are almost done with the outside clean-up.
We're heading down to 32 tonight, we'll go without a fire tonight but tomorrow night we might need one.
Right at 31 when I crawled out this morning. Pine slab is bringing the boiler back up to temp. Fires are keeping the house and the hot water warm longer.
I'm going to call it; our burning season is over. Last fire was Saturday morning to get the chill out of the house and the forecast for the rest of the week is highs in the upper 60s and lows in the mid 40s. Time to cleanup the stove and get ready for next year. KaptJaq
I'd like to call it but the propane furnace just don't take the damp out of the inside air. Lit a small fire the last couple nites just to dry out.
The LP furnace will take care of that dampness....just have to run it as long as you ran the wood stove!!
Rainy 45 ish outside, 62 ish inside.... Time to get the stove going(OSOH). Been wierd not having a fire for something like 2 weeks So let's see- oak, or.... oak? White oak it is!
I called it last Saturday. I have eaten enough of my next winter supply. Time to clean up the stoves and send them on summer vacation. Mean while, back @ the woodpile................
Our high was 54 today. Still 66 in the house from the small fire last night. Supposed to go down to 32 by 2 AM, so I guess I'll light another fire in a few minutes. Sure got spoiled being able to just toss wood in and have the stove take off before the door was closed. Now I have to take the time to actually start a fire, to collect tinder to start it with (that's OK, I'm cleaning my yard). Brought in a 4 inch wide wedge split last Spring from a 14 inch diameter sugar maple log . That will be tonight's fire, with some twigs and small, 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter branches. We'll be toasty again in 45 minutes. A barred owl has been calling right outside my living room for a while. Artan isn't liking the company very much. The first blue jays of the season have joined the robins, and the raven was flying around the yard today. The bird I've been hearing across Murphy's Bay [with the tremulous call] flew over the house today. It is some variety of goose. I have to look it up. The underwings are white, edged in black.
Dam. Down to 26ยบ this morning. Pine slab heating the boiler back up. Looks like it will be a nice day today, possibly high 60s.
35 this morning. Just cant call the game on burning. Still to cold. Was up by the lake and still ice as far as the eye can see. Gonna be cold for awhile. There was a 15 degree temp difference from 15 miles inland to lake shore.
Yes, the Rideau is still frozen, but the ice is slushy. I think it may go out today. We're supposed to be in the 60's and the sun is brilliant. House 70. Stove still at 225 after the small fire last night.
We hit 25 this morning, we had coffee by the fire, no fire tonight. We just got back from our first ride through our property I cut on, all trails are open but things are dry so we'll take some rain up here.
it was 66 inside when I got home last night only thing left is uglies, and sugar maple, built a small fire kept adding til 2am... was 27 this morning when I got up wife had a window cracked and 75 in the house... purrfect! might stop using firewood and burn up little kindling and chunk wood.. I get from a furniture down the road for free.. they only use oak, black walnut and cherry. easy to get, no one takes a lot this time of year.. kiln dried. I run shapings thru Chop saw to 8 inches they start at 1 inch thick to paper thin and 8 foot long as kindling. end of planks with splits or knots "chunks " I do not count them in my 11 cord but I got a barn stall full of chunks and 10 garbage cans full of kindling at start of season.. my shoulder wood lol.. burns fast hot and leaves bed of coals for hours...
There you go man if it's wood, it burns and makes heat. Because I scrounge my wood I have a lot of recutting to do and then end up with a lot of chunks to burn shoulder season
