17 out right now, wind is blowing strong, calling for a ton of snow. After I got done with work today I made supper then went out and opened the OWB up and cleaned out all the smoke/heat transfer tubes ( has 6 off the back of the fire box). I noticed for the last few days the OWB has been hard to keep at temp and not burning well. First time I did a tube clean since I started it this year, was due, then loaded it up with ash and red oak, checked it in a little bit and she was burning much better, nice and hot so all ready for the cold snap again this week.
-18 below now. The wind chill was way worse this morning at work. Wasn't a fun day to be on a roof. Over 90 degrees by my chair right now. Loving it.
28F now.... already dropped 2 degrees since I've been up about an hour... That North wind has returned once again... 74 in the house .. Reloaded for the day ....
22/73 Cherry Roller coaster ride the next few days. 50s tomorrow down to teens overnight. Rain, wind from different directions, snow Thursday night and Friday, single digits Saturday morning.
27 at home this morning. I got the stove fired up with a mix of black locust, apple, and a small bucket full of (untreated!) 2x3 lumber scraps, just to get rid of them. I don't see the hype about burning Doug Fir, but then again if I lived at 29,000 ft. elevation like Cash Larue and needed an oxygen tank whenever I stepped outside, maybe I'd get all starry-eyed about the stuff
Not sure if you're just or hard core. Either way I salute you. . 44/ now 73 calling for 60s, rain moving in. Started a fire with cherry and a small split of oak, just to take chill off.
Cleaning chimney? Job requirements? There were too many days during my working career that I had to be on a roof also. Many commercial buildings have rooftop units for their heating. Lucky me!
, Not hardcore, just Montanan. -34 right now. NOT roofing today. Too hard on tools. Air hoses, and everything else will crack or break. I may go set some beaver traps. Looks like it'll be cold for the rest of the week. All in all, we can't complain. This winter has been wonderfully mild.
55 now...headed for 65 this afternoon...then 25 tonight. I turned the boiler off yesterday morning, made one run on it for DHW yesterday afternoon, then turned it back off. I'll go wake it up around noon load up some ash and hickory.
I don't like it fellas. Life goes on, and if you don't work, you don't eat. If I was able to take cold weather days all the time, I'd be out of work pretty fast. However, I DO charge much much more to roof in inclement weather. All I have left is ridge cap, and I made 1500 yesterday instead of 400. I split one air hose yesterday, and the torpedo heater gelled up. It was worth it. I don't buy expensive air hoses anymore.
