11° and falling at 8 pm Ash, 3 yr seasoned honey locust, and apple in the stove. 77° in the stove room. Furnace is quiet,
14 F with snow falling at a pretty good clip. A mix of Beech and Maple in the Wood Gun for the overnight.
Supposed to be just +/- of 0 here tonight. Oak & Beech getting it done. Gotta go babysit 6 million worth of cars at the auto show tomorrow. 1925 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost & a 1923 Marmon. Seems they don't want any kids sticking boogers to the paint.
15.8 tonight with five plus inches of snow on the ground, it's still snowing so we might get another five by morning. I have a load of the Maples and four rounds of Ironwood going in the Lopi Liberty.
-11 out right now, calling for a low of -8 tonight... Think they missed the mark a little . Just stuffed the OWB full of Burr oak for the night.
I used to work alone a LOT ! Doing some fairly dangerous stuff. Now, my wife says I'm paranoid. I tell her, that Paranoia has helped keep me alive for the past half century. The colder it gets , the closer I stay to the house door. And the more I work to think thru every eventuality. Everything that might go wrong and how to avoid that or mitigate it.
Ide rather have 45 below than rain, sleet, snow mix. I Really Don't like that mix of precipitation ! Snows ok. Tho it gets dreary. Rain is okay, but it gets wet and unpleasant when it goes on for too long. But sleety kinda weather, I greatly Dislike !
Temp was up to 4 below last I checked. It blew steady and hard all day and it's still blowing !! Fire killed white spruce in the stove 2 nice 7 to 8" diameter rounds have been going for the past few hours. Very nice stuff to burn. Lots of heat. Little ashes. Burns clean with very little smoke. For winds like we've been having. I need to get one of those swiveling stove pipe caps.
27f here in Northeast Pennsylvania tonight. Burning a mix of black birch, red oak and ash. Last couple of weeks was ash and maple. I decided to finally crack into to the good reserves, including black locust because of the cold snap we had. I was struggling to get the upstairs to 65. Highest temps I was getting 35 feet directly across the basement from the stove was 72. Last year I consistently had above 85 on a good burn. Then I noticed onions and potatoes I had stored in the garage were frozen. That has never happened. Something told me to check the windows. One of the garage windows is hidden by the wife's junk on a shelf. I never noticed it was wide open. I don't know for how long. Don't know how it got opened, I know darn well I closed and locked it in November, because I was digging Christmas stuff out, and cursing the wife's junk as I fought to lock it. Oh well, lesson learned. Now the house is back up to 72 upstairs and a high of 85 downstairs during the height of a burn.
14/71 Burning an assortment from my SHTF stash in the attached garage. We've only got about 6 inches of snow so far but it has been blown everywhere including all over the wood on the porch. We are supposed to get another 3-5 today.
19 here. Stove full of cherry and some ash. Not sure about getting out for work anytime soon. The snow has drifted to the top of my boots in the driveway.
10 here and snowing. The load from last night was right down to a couple inches of red coals at 5:45. I reloaded with a 60/40 mix of White Pine and Maple. I plowed 5-6 inches last night between 8-9. I’m not sure how much we have received since then. Guessing another 4-5 inches. Tough to tell until I get out there. But I’m in no rush. Schools closed for kids and so far two hour delay for wife this morning. They are happy. Just like yesterday. I’m on a day off today. It will be time to clean up snow soon. But because no one has to get out right away I’ll wait until it’s light out.
Friday is usually Beer run day. Thanks to careful, well planned hoarding last Fall, I'm skipping it today in all the snow and wind.
