Started a fire for the first time in several days. Have some oak on there. It's going to be in the 50's in the morning, it's currently in the 60s. Had some bad thunderstorms roll through overnight and possibly some more tonight. In the last 3 days or so I bet we have had 4"s of rain.
11’ tonight. 70’ in the renovated pole barn (hunting lodge). The R30 insulation on the finished part helps! Burning oak, Osage again in both stoves. Still haven’t filled my MO muzzleloader buck tag. Passed on a 6 pointer this morning. Didn’t see anything this pm. I’m whipped and going to bed. 4:30am comes early.
I don't know if any days are record highs but this fall (lol we don't have fall here) and just til recently was crazy warm. Back to reality recently, cold, snow, wind, and this year snow drifts that could last til May, they are like 12-15' high behing the back yard and minimum 12' in the fenced back yard. "Fenced" is a joke now, all our wire fences lines are collapsed from drifts and the wood one (I believe it was orig a snow fence for horses in the pole barn) is drifted over. Good thing our new doggie sticks around most the time, she's only taken off once, she was on the heels of a jack rabbit/snow hare hybrid, and she came back finally. After a very long run where she became a black dot on the snow way way way in the distance
Knothead, I know you have horses, I guess I should give some prespective here, it's only a 1 acre lot and the fenced back yard is ~ 1/8th acre, no ranch by any small stretch.
Hey wildwest, 2021 will go down as one of the craziest weather years of my life. January 1st was the hottest on record, had my home a/c running and also my car a/c. Then last night the temps dropped from the mid 70's down to 30 degrees this morning. I do have two very old horses here that hate the cold weather, they spend most of their time in a small loafing shed which shelters them from wind and rain. I have five Texas Longhorn cows and one steer which I believe like the cold weather, just as long as they can stay dry. Last February temps got down to 9 degrees for two days and nights and all the animals decided to spend most of their time in the loafing shed. Snow is very uncommon in my area, we might have snow every 10 years or so. I can't image what you and your animals are going thru with what just hit Wyoming. Good luck and stay warm.
Pics. ! Our massive drift is still in it's infancy. It's not quite 5' tall yet. Nor is it all the way across our property. But, it's supposed to blow from the east starting tomorrow. That really stacks the drift. My wife and dog are standing around 10 feet above the ground. This pic was taken last winter.
Well, I was hopefull for warmer temps. But I just checked and we r back down to 43 under 0. Got the stove full of aspen . I have a load of fairly good Birch that I've been sorting to. My next load will be that then go to bed.
-10/65 But, it's a "cold" 65.....if that makes any sense, Basement is 59. Figured I'd start the furnace early today.
Since most of the year is winter here at 64 North. 7 to 8 months a year. People get very used to winter. It's the norm. In a lot of places in the area there are stands of beattle killed spruce. It's mostly bone dry. Then there are the burns. Where full crown wildfires roared thru. The trees left. Which is most. After a few to several years most of the remaining bark falls off. For this area, it is wonderful firewood. I will be targeting live birch for my hoarding this winter and will have next winters wood processed by the end of May and covered. Lord willing ! I think I'll get alot more serious about getting a stove that has a much longer burn time and higher btu output. Probably a Blaze King Princess.
13F Outside/73F inside 7 hours of holding power on 2 pieces of silver maple and the rest hedge from last night. With just enough coals to start the 4 pieces of walnut and the rest is full of hedge for todays burn. Then brought in 4 chunks of silver maple for the other half to put in around noon to take me till I get home...
