Nope none, if there was the stove would dry it right out. We do have temps drop into the 50's now and then inside when the stove wasn't lit. My wife doesn't mind the cold for sleeping, so all is good. We have a small house so the temp comes up fast once a fire is going. It's only 30 out so it's no big deal, once it actually gets cold out the stove will be going 24/7.
I came home from work one time to find the indoor temperature to be 38. I don't remember what the outdoor temp was but must have been quite low. I got the fire going and called for service on the furnace. I had a smaller stove at the time and have done a bunch of insulating, etc since so I don't anticipate a repeat of this. I'm also retired so I'm not gone for long periods during frigid weather.
See I'm not the only one, it must be a New England thing. You'll see folks around here still wearing shorts with temps in the teens at the store.
60 outside now with 25 mph winds, gusts to 50 mph. Have not put anything in the stove since yesterday morning. Start back up tonight as back in the 20's overnight. Heading out shortly to do some Santa work for Mrs Claus.
It was 57 here at about 5:30, dropped to 51 with the winds just howling. No trees down so far, but they're really swaying. 3 Maple splits in the boiler for now. Raining hard at the moment, supposed to change to snow mid day. I'm not going into the woods today, bit dangerous I think.
27 out right now, getting ready to head out side... My Ma sent me this photo this morning. Just about 11 inch's of snow. I think I may be a little over that here.
16°f outside 70°f inside, oak heating it up. Personal Weather Station Dashboard | Weather Underground (wunderground.com)
I'm just catching wind of all those tornadoes out in the center of the country. I hope the best for everyone there. They say it's heading east. Just a real crappy freezing rain here. I think that I'll plug in the block heater on the generator just in case.
Highs in the lower 40's yesterday. Big wind storm all night and lots of rain. Low of 51* this AM and holding steady so the wind brought warm air with it. Maybe not so cold out but still started a fire in defiance of the wind and rain. Doug Fir and bark in the stove. Warm and toasty now inside. Had a nice breakfast cooked by the cute gal who also lives here!
Every once in a while when it gets cold here I'll see knuckle heads get out of their pickups or cars and they are wearing shorts. Easy way to get seriously injured. It's 1 thing to wear them at home to put the dogs out or something at 40 below. Quite another to get in your rig and go for a drive. No guarantee that vehicle will keep running and making heat until they get back to where it's warm. And it's not just guys. Plenty of girls wear the skimpy skin tight jeans and a super light jacket or vest. Out and about. Moose walk across the road at 55 below just like they do at 55 above. The EMS services around this area have a big dragon heater in their rig with a couple trunk lines. In case of a pin in. They will fire it up and stick a trunk in a window to keep the injured warm enough so they don't get frost bite or become hyperthermic while being extracted. It's amazing how many people don't have emergency gear with them.
No kidding. It doesn't even get that cold here, but my trucks have warm coats, hats, gloves etc. that ride around in them all winter. I'll walk if I need to, but I ain't gonna freeze doing it!
27/64 this morning. Probably close to 7" of fresh new untouched by human hands overnight snow! Mailbox is getting beat to hell very time the snowplow roars past. It is on a swing post; that helps out quite a bit. But, I think I'm going to make a shield for it.
Thanks to a bizarre warm front that went through today which brought rain, the trees are now covered in heavy wet snow and ice. Will be interesting tonight with forecasted winds in the 40-60 mph range and gusts to 80. Fully expect power to go out at some point and possible chainsaw work tomorrow.
Somewhere around 0 here Breezy. My back has been out the past couple days . I got the rafters cut and up and nailed in place yesterday. It was a challenge getting the scaffold set up by myself. Every thing I do gets us closer to having a closed in entryway tho Fire killed White spruce in the stove
