-20 last night. Had the house up to about 72 before the overnight load. Of course, the DV was running. Got up at about 3:45 (alarm was set for 4) and refilled with 6 good sized splits of Oak on top of a huge coal bed. Almost 70 when I got back up at 7, so .....gooder. Some more cold until late this week, maybe early next week, then warming to the mid 20s and above for March. Woo-freakin-hoo. Once this row of Oak is gone, I'm going to start using the Maple during the day. We'll see how that goes. ETA: I've got more than another cord of Oak in the shed, but I really don't want to use it. Once the weather breaks a little, I may pilfer some more Maple from the stacks.
Yesterday we were above 20, this morning we were -6 with a stiff wind, the basement was 80, the living room was 70 and the sleeper came in at 68. I hit the floor in the living room last night with the IR gun, it read 76.4 and this morning they read 74 in the same spots. Those temps are running both stoves, pellet and wood.
We're going down to 2F again tonight. I'm almost out of hickory so I'll be mixing some ash in there to make it last a few more days.
Thermometer shows -8 right now. Burning down some Pine and Mixed blend pellets in the boiler so I can load it up with Ash for the night. When I went down to camp to get the pellet stove cleaned out and running again I decided I might as well hook the plow up and clean things up from the snow we got. Did that but it was cold when I was outside hooking it up and shoveling a couple spots on the stairs and walk.

For about the fourth or fifth time this month, I have decided tonight is the coldest night left in the winter, so I am pulling my best firewood to the front of the queue. I am burning some nice big splits of four-year old White Oak tonight and it is going down to about -6F tonight here in central PA. Fortunately I have enough of the old oak for a couple more weeks at least, so when Thursday turns out just as cold as tonight I can burn my best firewood yet again.
Do what you have to do! There are far worse things than ash. Today got to like 11 degrees. It's 5 out now. Burning elm and some ash pieces from branches that fell in wind storms last spring. Ash sure dries quickly. That reminds me when we finally get somewhere near upper 20s temp wise, I need to borrow the neighbors extension ladder and cut a few smaller ash branches that broke and just cut off this one big ash branch that is hanging too low. The weather has not cooperated.
Well if you and Bear get real bored you could always start drinking beer and munching popcorn together. Then get some of that unique Canadian Hozer music going. Pull out the banjo, and between that and that funky beat you two would have going between the burpin and a fartin you guys would be solid man! Eat your heart out Bryan Adams! Phhhhhhh.
New guy here. I'm burning some walnut, hackberry and ash in my Central 6048. Supposed to be -5 tonight and the house is 70 so we are good to go !!
Welcome to the FHC, bear_hunter! I've been burning a ton of walnut for the past month and a half, I really am impressed with it. It's been seasoned under cover for three years so it's bone-dry...... Glad to have you, post some pics of your setup when you get some time. We love pics!!
It's - 11 in the pines so I'm getting ready to fill the Liberty with some nice Beech, we still have another small rack of Beech ready to go, after that it's Ironwood.
At 5am in Connecticut it's -9 outside 73 inside...loaded a few splits of maple. Last night I went to bed early (8:30), it was 8 outside 75 inside. I woke at 1am it was -5 outside 71 inside. The Smoke Dragon requires frequent attention to keep the stovepipe and stovetop temps in the proper range, but it has kept the house nice and warm in the coldest month since they have kept records. Maybe someday I'll get one of them new fangled woodstoves...and get to sleep all night.
