Mountains give lots of information about extremes! Sort of like the Great Lakes piling up the snow; yet the high mountains still beat in this category. 320" of snow is common just in a couple spots in MI but in southern MI the ground is bare most of the time; just a few short periods after a storm.

Tom, how does your new heating unit compare with the old and how is the amount of wood used?

My new house is 1,000 square feet smaller, not sure if 5 star stick frame is as insulated as log. It seems like I burn about the same amount. But the radiant floor heat is something special along with domestic hot water being heated by the OWB.

I agree. While the information on the website is interesting, it has to be taken with a grain of sand. For example, three of the four records it shows for my state are from the top of Mount Washington (the highest peak in the northeast) so it is not a good representative measure of the rest of the state. Still, interesting data to look through (especially considering I only live a few miles from those three records).

There was another skim coat of ice on the lake this morning (at daylight) but only for a hundred feet out and not even all the way across my frontage. Way too much water to coat over with ice at 27f.

But.....the wind picked up and within 1/2 hour, everything was gone.

Yes, radiant floor heat is something I've often thought about. It has to be super nice.

    -27 . Wind died off .
    Got spruce in the stove.
I've got some oak 1x3s that were trim lumber . I'm going to make a longer handle on my coals hook/ stove poker. Tired of almost burning my hands when taking the coals to the front.

High of 34 tomorrow. Planning to fire the Jotul for the first time this season tomorrow. Red oak, hickory and an oddball mulberry in the heater tonight.

Picked up some new glass cleaner on eBay. This stuff is serious. Active ingredient is potassium hydroxide. Spray on, wait a minute, wipe off. No scrubbing required. I just kept it from sitting on the metal frame of the door with a couple quick wipes with a paper towel.

It actually feels like overkill to use something that requires latex gloves just to clean the doors. I may try a less concentrated solution for routine use.

Warmed up to 15 below , the moon is out AND it's snowing. This has sure been an odd weather winter so far. I found my beaver fur musher's/ trappers hat this afternoon. Ha ha, cercumvent the wind getting to my forehead !
Raked the coals to the front and loaded the stove with a hollow hearted Aspen split, a 7" round of Aspen . A 4" and a 2" round of black spruce wiggled in on top of it all. Will refuel the generator and plug in the pickup in an hour, check and top off the stove then go to bed.

That is a lot of wood for this early in the season. Makes one wonder what the total will be come spring or summer.

But it always seemed to me sweat could be a problem in those boots.
