Just loaded the stove up with the same thing red oak and sugar. Breaking records here this morning 23 below zero, hallelujah the wind is calm The house is popping and creaking
Its wicked stupid cold here this morning with the thermometer reading -18° outside. I can hear the house popping and my basement is down to 38°. I just raked the coals around to burn them down but the house is 69° upstairs and 70° in the stove room will be reloading shortly with all Shagbark Hickory!
-12 here this morning with some wind. Ash did well overnight. Reloaded with Ash in first half then Pine on top half. Stay warm, and hey, let's be careful out there.
-12 here this morning and the wind is still pounding. All good in the cave @ 71. Both stoves had big coal beds in which they are in the burn down mode as we speak. Good day to get some things done inside. Everyone stay safe and warm and check in on any elderly or infirmed folks you might know.
Added two sugar splits at 3AM. Still have nice blue flames. WInd has been steady, so I wasn't even aware of it...til I opened the door. Unless it is gusty, my house is quiet. We have extreme chill warnings til after 2 PM...wind chill below -30 until then. Looking ahead, the lows have been lowered for the coming week. More weather with -17F at night. Looks like the temps are not going to moderate at all until March, when they are calling for lots of precip, which looks like it may be icy. Fun and games. We now have quite a bit of snow cover, very light and powdery, about 30-36 inches in the woods. No major snowfalls yet theis year. Most has been about 6 inches. Yesterday was a beautiful clear day. Walking down the road into the sun, the snow on the road was a sparkling mass of infinitisimally tiny prisms, refracting the light into all the colors of the rainbow. Magical. Red headed and pileated woodpeckers hammering away....the pileated also scolded my dog for quite a while. Nuthatches, chickadees, and maybe an eagle? Wasn't close enough to be sure, but big, and the right shape.....
-2 here which may not be much for you guys, but it beats the previous record by a bunch. Burning down coals and drinking coffee. Little chilly in the 1810 farm house.
Channel 4 in DC said this morning that this is the coldest it's been on February 20 in 119 years! Wind chills down to -15, real temps around -5 in some areas around here.
Last winter we had -53 one morning on the iron range. I was outside working on a tailings pipeline that day. It was brisk. -Dan
More daily records have been set this morning Flint's -23 at 4am was an all-time February record and only 2 degrees from the coldest ever recorded (-25 on January 18th, 1976). Wind chills are running in the -25 to -30 range with any slight breeze.
I went out on the porch last night in my slippers ,it was -20° For 3 minutes Heck , I don't like going outside if It's below 20 above zero, I do this
-9 this morning with a realfeel of -28, the basement is 79, the floors range from 70-74, the living room was 68 and the sleeper came in at 66. We ran both stove last night, the load of Ironwood left some nice size coals, I through on three beech splits too burn them down. The same menu is on tap for tonight, Beech and Ironwood for the wood stove and the Pellet stove will be set at 79 in the other corner.
-28 this am. Wife having hand surgery this morning 1.5 hours from home, so we left at 8, and man it was a bit chilly. The Jeep almost didn't start. 56 in the kitchen and 60 in the living room this morning, and it's back up to almost 15 OT, and almost 72 in the LR at 2:30 pm. Lots of coals left over, so I threw one Oak split on when we got home, and I'll do that a couple more times to get rid of the coals. Might use some Maple, since that'll just turn to fluff. ETA: For wildwest ........uh, yes,we go outside. Only when needed though. I take the dogs out several times a day, and need firewood from the shed. Gotta' do what ya' gotta' do.
Only -16c here and going up to -6 later today. Bunch of snow also but not the toe/finger ripping cold that's been here for way to long. Supposed to get nice and cold again by Monday though. Hope your wife made out great dave. Whoops forgot to mention that there is elm in the T5.
That's crazy cold for here, especially end of February. Supposed to rain tomorrow. I gotta get out on a ladder and chip ice from and open two more downspouts. Chip more ice in one or two more ice dams. Tried calcium chloride in a sock thrown up on the ice. They just sit there on top of the ice. Too cold to melt. Too cold for propane. Too cold for hot water although I've opened up the downspouts with water heated on top the stove. Lots of people up on roofs yesterday afternoon and last night shoveling off snow. Gangs of guys going around charging $200 to shovel off a roof. That's not too bad, imo. 4 guys, an hour and a half, pack up the ropes and off to the next one.
Woo Hoo, finally above zero this a.m. Supposed to get about an inch of snow today. Doing a coal burn down in both stoves. Will reload them for the day with beech and maple. Everyone have a safe warm day.
