Very interesting. If me and Rope had wood like rock maple, elm and white ash to burn, we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. Got the beams set and the floor framed for the Arctic Entry today. Got the subflooring on and screw tacked down after dinner. Thank God ! I had a good day. Tho it's Slow having to beat and chip/scrap ice off the lumber . I hand nailed everything that I didn't screw . Even at $150 a box of 50 lbs , 20 penny Common Double hot dipped galvanized. It's a lot less than the 4 and 5 " screws that I use. Too cold to have a nail gun laying out there. Plus it's all locally sawn or off my mill rough cut. So it runs 1 3/4" to 2" thick. The beams are 5x 9 . They are sized to take any load I will put on them and are more than the joists they support. Currently 25°F Fkws and 1 split of white birch in the stove . Closed down for the night.
Haven't been here all summer long, too busy to comment or even read. First fire in the outdoor wood boiler on Saturday the 30th of October. I am burning 3-year seasoned red oak and pine right now, makes for a good mix and hot fire. Next few weekends will be for cutting and splitting wood for 2023-24. I have two massive red oaks in the woods that fell over during high winds, both are >24" diameter and they took a lot of smaller stuff with them. I got my work cut out for me.
Mid 20's and a heavy frost outside. Supposed to be 50 and sunny later. Have to be careful or the house will get too hot in this kind of weather. Boiler is running on some cherry, ash, and soft maple uglies.
Upper 40's last night. Filled the stove with maple, some cottonwood, a single stick of cherry that made its way into the pile somehow because I know I didn't stack it, and a wood brick that I love using. Woke up to my outdoor thermometer claiming it was 26F and my phone telling me it was 31. Threw a few more sticks in the fire while I took a shower and everything was up and running a few minutes later. Had to take the motorcycle into work again today and the onboard temp gauge was reading 30F for a while and climbed to 34F by the time I made it to work. Lots of frost on car windows as I was going through the neighborhoods. I love this season.
34F here this morning, 28 yesterday. I burn shoulder wood till temps are consistently below freezing or I run out. Usually I run out. I've been burning a mix of Elm, Ash, Soft Maple etc. because that's what I have.
Just had our first two fires of the season. Wife made a small one yesterday afternoon to take the chill off. I made another one this morning. Was 64F this morning in the house before fire. Outside temp right around 32F. But, with daytime highs still exceeding 50F, we overheat fairly quickly if we burn too much too fast. The victims this morning were couple splits of Ash, plus several random chunklies from Ugly Box #1. We'll be burning some pine and related shoulder wood for the next few weeks for sure, plus the chunklies.
Be careful on that bike with temps like that. Frost on windshields could be frost on the roads. All it takes is one spot at the wrong time and it's no bueno. Is the car/ truck closer to being fixed?
Yesterday we took my car in to get the snow tires swapped on, so I was on the bike. Today we took my wife's car in so we swapped vehicles so she could get to work. Tomorrow I'll be back on 4 wheels.
44 and drizzling and it’s 73 inside. The chestnut oak coals in the stove toasted my face when I opened the doors. Might drop below freezing tonight.
Low this AM of 60*. Must be a Pineapple Express or El Nino or La Nina or something messing with the weather. It was cooler yesterday so we had a fire but not this morning as the house is still quite warm. When we have been burning, I have been using some slightly past prime Doug Fir. Burns a little faster than normal but good for shoulder season conditions!
Low of 29 tonight. Getting down to the last of the curing fires for the season and looking forward to full sized splits. Hot smoked salmon in the black oven over shagbark hickory tonight.
Wait, what was your address again? Doesn't get any better than that. Supposed to get down to about 30 here, it was a nice day at 45 & some sun. Gonna make firewood tomorrow & Saturday! "Stuff" in the boiler.
+27°F ambient . Wind Chill shows +12° Fkws in the stove. Hoping tomorrow is a short day at work . I'm buying a cord of 2 year shed seasoned aspen and I want to go get it. This coming week the temps are supposed to get below 0. Which will be Great for driving. But I want more wood on hand. Only have 3 cord here at the moment.
