Cool and cloudy today, a far cry from what experienced this past week. Mid 80's got to be old when trying to get work done in the woods. Taking today off seeing it is a day of rest (Sunday) and firing up the log splitter tomorrow to split the oak I brought to the processing area. Hope I have enough to finish the last stacking area.
Haven't burned anything since I did the season's break-in fire last week. Yesterday was in the mid 70's here, today rain and low 60's.
For me it was the deal that I couldn't pass up. Thousand bucks. I had to put a starter in it a couple months later. The 6.2 Detroit under the hood just goes and goes . No monster on power. But plenty of power for what I need. Worst part about the truck is it was on the coast for a while so it has body cancer in parts of the cab. I don't drive it except to plow with. Or use it as a yard mule sometimes in the summer just to run it, move a trailer around or a mobile scaffold ect. It has Timbren stop bumpers in the front so it doesn't squat a lot from the plow.
Nothing burning yet but getting close. Last few AMs it has been cool in the house and the Wif has had the furnace on for a bit. I loaded the wheelbarrow with Doug Fir splits and brought it inside with a basket of kindling. I will be high and far away mushroom and grouse hunting tomorrow but probably Tuesday will have a morning fire. Can't wait!
You can't beat that deal, I would have jumped on that also. In Wisconsin your lucky if they have any body left from the salt.
Ya, we don't put up with that salted roads in The Interior. There are enough idiots in Fairbanks that they put that junk on the roads sometimes. Rope has it made as there are no military bases or other attractants for a continual stream of ( what's the right word) , grossly incompetent winter drivers. In Delta we do have that with Ft Greely. Once winter sets in good. The roads and highways dehydrate. Then driving on ice is no biggy. Right now , it's Slick. My 99 Dakota, u can work under it and there is NO rust. Same with our 06 E350 and 12 F350. Nots and bolts aren't rust welded in place. It's Nice. I know where there was , maybe still is , at least 50 Studebaker's sitting in the brush. Body metal still hard as a rock ! Mechanically driven to death. But not rusted out.
That's awesome, they just dump the salt on the roads here and 1/2 the times make it worse, turns from snow to slush. Winter isn't a new thing for Wisconsin yet seems like no one knows how to drive in snow
Hahahaha! That's about 80% here. Add to that high humidity & lack of true cold temps most of the time & it's a real experience driving here when it snows. I don't believe it occurs to most to get up & leave early, leave distance between cars etc. Most drive like it's a bright sunny day in July. I no longer commute to work & I don't miss it. It's pretty entertaining to watch the headlights go round & round & point up at the sky when I'm out feeding the boiler in the morning before daylight though. I've got a half decent view of the road at about a 1/4 mile after the corn & leaves are off. First snowfall is truly a great thing of stupidity to behold here too. I'm betting this year will be even worse after almost no snow last year. We've had a crapload of city folk move down here in the last few years that never drove a country road with blowing snow & drifts. Most are far safer parked in the ditch than driving anyway.
Had to deal with the Alaska Highway shut down for 12 hours, all because the closest tow truck was 250 mile away in Glennalen. When I came upon the spin out they had been there 5 hours.
By and large, when northern midwesterers get here they are ok to good drivers. For some reason we get lots from well south of the Mason Dixon. Look like a deer in the headlights when I ask them if they are prepared for winter.
Spent another 1 1/4 hours plowing this evening. Got things fairly well tuned up. Current temp 28°F some flakes coming down Fkws in the stove . Closed down pretty snug. Temp in the house 70°
Kind of odd actually. I just read that our first frost isn't expected till the third week of October. About a month late. No fires till then most likely.
Yeah, it is weird. Good for farmers and for costs of heating buildings but who knows what will happen later?
28° again this morning. I'm debating on chaining up the van to go to work. I have studded Hankook I Pikes on the rear. Dyna Pro ATM on the front . Non studded. No weight in the back and it's 2 wheel drive. If it was 10° colder. I wouldn't even think about it. Fire killed white Spruce in the stove putting along. Only burning 2 armloads a day .
It's been very mild, above average forecast all week as well. We just started combining high moisture corn at work today, and normally it's cold and I had the ac on all day in the tractor, in my sleeveless shirt. I drove a 2wd truck for most winters, still do. I can make it around better then most of the yahoos in there 4x4s that think they can do 70 as they have 4wd.
