It's a nice 2°f here right now. Got up around 430 to load the stove with some oak, ash and hickory. House was 66 when I got up. Cruising along at 70 now. Sure am glad I sprung for the real hardwood table, don't think those pressed wood ones would burn this good.
Ontario is still open and youre getting heat off the lake. Erie is froze over and Canada is sending us the polar express right across the ice = 34 below !!! YIKES I got up around 7am and the gas furnace was running so I headed for the weather station because the only time the gas furnace runs is if its REALLY COLD out or I forget to load before bed. I saw -34 and loaded my furnace quick and then got dressed to go load dads boiler. Went to start pickup and all I got was a groan. Looks like a refreshing morning walk to dads . Glad its only 1/4 mile to his house. By the time I loaded that monster and got back my klackers were about to Krack.
Woke up about 5:00 to zero outside and the wind still blowing. It was 65F in the house. Too many coals for a full re-load so I put 3 nice size splits on top to start to warm the place up. Went downstairs and opened the air on the coal stove a little then went back to bed. Got up at 7:30 to 1F outside, 70F upstairs, & 75F downstairs. Started the oven to make fresh biscuits for breakfast and help warm upstairs a little. This cold is unusual for us, a couple of neighbors have frozen pipes. KaptJaq
-18 about 4 this a.m., when the alarm went off, and 67 in the living room. Loaded 6-7 splits, and stayed with it for a few, then went back to bed until 7:45. 69 in the LR, and up to -11 out. Raked coals, put in 2 small splits and we're back up to almost 71. Looks like we're due for another week of this, although not quite as cold, then the temps start going up.
Holy crap Record-breaking cold here last night 19 below zero , luckily there was no wind, 63 in the house this morning stove top was 375, loaded with oak and sugar now
Another round of cold coming, this is from NOAA. That Ironwood is coming in this afternoon, the Oak is next to the Ironwood but it needs another year. ANOTHER ROUND OF DANGEROUSLY COLD WEATHER WILL IMPACT WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEW YORK WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY. WIND CHILLS VALUES COLDER THAN 20 BELOW ZERO WILL BE POSSIBLE FOR MANY LOCATIONS DURING THIS TIME FRAME. It's still -14 but the sun is strong.
NOAA better pull the thermometer out of their azz. Its been 20 below and colder here a lot of nites with no wind chill.
HEY HEY! I do see in the extended forecast that the coldest temps might be leaving us. Saturday and Sunday they say it is possible that we could see 20º during the day! I'll take a of my thermometer if I see that temperature or higher on it! Wait. Should I be celebrating because we are going to see 20º?
'Bout 10 degrees here, give or take, windchill just below zero and snow is falling..I've been feeding the greedy hungry monster out back a steady diet of oak, ash, locust,,,about everything but the kitchen table!! Can't complain, every room in the house is 70 degrees,,,one thing about owning/operating an owb, ya' really have to like to cut far'wood, or not be smart enough to do anything else!!
Time can just recycle some of their articles from the 70s, then wait a decade or more and recycle the warming articles lol.
Came home from work and reloaded with some walnut/cherry mix, not as cold today but -8 deg last night was plenty cold for Ohio. Some of you are really testing the springs in your thermometers so this might be sweatshirt weather to you right now. lol
Never got above 9 degrees today at my house. 10 hour burn with Hickory kept the house at 72 degrees. I could open the stove up a bit more and get the house warmer but I would rather have 70-72 degrees and conserve some wood by keeping with the same loading schedule and cubic foot of wood burned per day as when it is warmer.
That's what I do to as long as I can stay around 68-70-72 on the real cold days In the morning I open the stove up the stove until I get the house warmed up
Cold here again. I cut a small load of hedge to get me through the week. It measured 12-16 %...should be dry enough.
We're down to -16 so the Pellet & Wood Stoves will be going again, the Pellet Stove is going and the Wood Stove is burning down some coals from the Ironwood I put in before supper.
It is -8 on my back porch right now. I'm waiting for the boiler to turn on again and I'm going to fill it with Ash splits. Suppose to be a low of -20 here tonight. Remember I said I wouldn't mind a few days of -30 or even -35 to kill some of those EABs and some ticks. I wish we would of had them already because I am getting tired of this friggin cold!
Shagbark Hickory & Red Oak. It really isn't fair keeping the downstairs at 75+ in this weather. When my neighbor came over and the wind chill was -20 he could not believe my stove could do what it was doing. I made sure I was wearing a FHC t-shirt!!!
Our SIL was over the other day. She has a daughter around 1, she said her cheeks were rosy cause she was not used to the house being so warm. Shoot it was only 73° in here. It was colder than a witches you know outside and windy as all get out. I just smiled and said yup all just the wood stove.
