Welcome Prometheus ....joining us right in the “heat of the battle” to stay warm! These guys will really help with that, they have helped me immensely!
Would those be considered part of the 40 mile herd? Do they just show up in the winter? I didn’t think caribou lived around Tok all year.
Both really, 40 combined with Nalchina, and we have the mentasta herd and Mccomb, and yes we have them year around.
The ice? We have plenty of that, looks like that for 6 or so months then it’s shoulder season with black ice.
Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! Tell me about it! We ran through all of our stacked and seasoned wood pretty early on. Had to burn a real medley after that – some smaller standing dead red oak I cut down last year, a cherry from my parents' place, three smaller pines I cut down for a neighbor, scraps from the fence we built last summer (green rough sawn white oak from an Amish miller). That's all gone now, too. Now I'm out there attacking the mill end pile every week or two. I don't know if we even have enough splits left for the rest of the day... But tomorrow is supposed to be in the low teens in the afternoon which is fine weather to bust out the Jonsered and the Fiskars. And fortunately those mill ends have been stacked for about 3 years now and covered all winter, so they're ready to burn as soon as they're cut and split. It's pretty meaty stuff which is nice, not like lumber scraps. Mostly around 6-10" thick at the flared end and 1-2 feet wide. When we unloaded them most of those slabs took 3 guys to carry and even that was a struggle.
Woke up at 4AM to -30f. Then it dropped to -33f, but not before this: Sugar maple and birch blaze to quickly warm it up inside. At a remote weather station about 50 miles NW of us, close to Ely, MN, it hit -50f overnight.
Welcome Prometheus ! Iowa is a nice area, I am only a couple hours away from there, been through there a few times.
Stay warm up there! I have lots of memories of snowmobiling up to Ely. One trip was -40F +. Talk about cold riding! The 2 smoke oil jugs had to be put in a sink full of hot water in the AM to get warmed up enough to pour Normal back in those days. Thought nothing of it. How times have changed....
Snowing HARD here. Wind is kicking too. Just loaded the boiler...hard to say with what....too much snow in my eyes.
Not too cold here now - high 20’s. Them weather folks say we’re in for a big blow tonight into tomorrow with significant snow - guess we’ll see. I’ve got lots of wood and no reason to venture out. Stay safe
Just above freezing. Raining. May get some ice , maybe not. Weatherman playing both sides of coin. Calling for snow Thursday. 75* in stove room. A couple chunks of ash and a split of hackberry doing the job.
26* loaded up the OWB with some Red Oak and Red Maple 72* inside. Light Snow falling forecast calls for 3" - 6" with an additional 0.10" of Ice I have got to say I do not miss having to work in this crap anymore.
