35 and 70. On the edge of another minor snow event 2 to 6 inches. Meh. The real issue is the 45mph winds that start at noon and the temps dropping to zero or below for the next several days! Wind and snow in cornfield country means blizzard conditions. Exactly what is being predicted! Yeeeeehaaaaaa.
Or more to the point, what is the coldest you've ever felt? For me it was -52 degrees and it was not fun.
I've had the eyelashes freeze together fun. Couldn't blink! I was just telling somoeone the coldest temps I had and still went to work (why?) was -44. Don't know what the wind chill was that day. Overnight, about 2" of snow but first had a freezing drizzle/rain driven by some wind as I heard it hitting the windows. That didn't last long though. Currently snowing with a light breeze. Walk is done-nice and quiet out there this morning. Calling for 9" with 35 mph winds. (yawn....ho-hum)
I had to go to work when it was -77* (did not turn the truck off) commute is right @ 100 miles each way, spent about half the day outside rescuing folks that had no business being going out in that weather unprepared. Its amazing what breaks in the cold, metal and plastic shatter like glass. Have to use web tow straps because chains will snap. Not to mention that any heavy enough pressure on your skin will likely freezer burn, anything that can transfer the cold will get you. The cold is dangerous, mother nature gets her respect one way or the other-your choice. Interior Alaska is no place for the unprepared, especially in hard winter.
36 damp and dreary outside right now. Boiler is loaded with some BL, hedge, and white oak. Winter scheduled to make its first appearance of the year next week.
The coldest I ever experienced was only -32f but it was in a bad storm with 25 MPH sustained wind with 50-60 MPH gusts...it was bad. Trees were snapping like toothpicks and trucks were getting pushed sideways off the road... today is nice thought...38 at noon, bright and sunny. Odd ends keeping the stove running for tonight. Keep warm good people!
36F, bright and sunny with only some leftover red oak coals slowly burning down. House is around 72. I keep raking them forward periodically trying to reduce them as much as possible. I’ll probably let it go out completely until later tonight when temperatures warrant more burning. Tomorrow I’ll turn the oil furnace on since it’ll be around 40. Good day to clean the stove out and replenish the wood racks just outside the back door.
Talking to son earlier. Lives in Cedar Rapids. He was on 80 at the time and stated he was going 35. Sounds more like your January weather than February. Stay safe.
Yup, those bitter cold days, a guy even had trouble hanging onto the pipe wrenches after a little while!
It was 15.3 when we were having our first cup of coffee and dropped to 12.3 by the time we had our second cup. We switched over to firewood this morning from pellets, a few ash splits and a bunch of limb wood went in the Liberty.
Still in the low 20's here. the first time snow shoveling (3 so far) was the difficult one as it was wet and heavy. The next two times it was just heavy. Still snowing; I'm going to guess 5"-6" so far.
I got outside around 3:30 this afternoon to clean off the driveway and deck and open a path to the shed so I can get wood down when needed. Glad I got it done today instead of waiting until tomorrow when it will be a lot colder. No pics, I was tired. We got about 6 inches of snow.
Was already starting to snow when I got up at 430am, figured it was going to be a shorter day at work but ended up being a 12 hour shift, got about 5in of snow over the day. Got home about 6pm, headed back out side about 630 and fired up the snow blower and got the driveway cleared, got done with the about 8pm, walked in the house looking like frosty the snow man from the snow blowing back at me with the wind, walked over to the misses and gave her a hug and kiss leaving her covered in snow... To show her I love her you know... She seemed happy about it. Back out the door I went and filled up the OWB and took care of the animals, almost done for the night. Going down to -5 tonight, very windy. The pups enjoyed the snow a lot more then me.
Coldest I've seen was -28F & only once. I used to have go "un gel" fuel in loaders in the middle of the night when I worked for a big snow removal company. That job was not nice at 0 & below with a stiff wind. 33F here now with about 4" of wet snow & still going. 10mph wind from the south till the front goes through, then teens & west wind for lake effect snow till further notice. 1-2' predicted by next week this time. Oak & Ash in the boiler.
