Yeah, I thought we were heading there today as well however although it did break into the low 40's, it's a cold, damp, raw day with no sun. Was holding off on starting a fire but can't shake the chill inside the house (leaving the patio doors open so the dog can wander out on the deck doesn't help). Just started the stove with some ash and white birch to get rid of the chill while I go out to split and stack.
Possible the last nice day for awhile. 60f today, upper 30's very low 40's for the foreseeable future. Did a little splitting but third piece of oak got me so now a big old blackeye and fat upper lip. That was a first.
I am guessing that the position of 'pics or it didn't happen' doesn't apply with Stephiedoll 's incident Hope you heal up fast
Guessing it feels worse than it looks, but I do have a picture. Just thought I would spare the innocent. I would say the splitter is working well at the way that log shot out from it. lol
30 this morning. I just loaded Pine and Ash splits into the Wood Gun. Suppose to go to 45 today with sun. I won’t be complaining.
21* out 70* in....heavy frost last night. Its supposed to get near 60* again today . They're saying warmish and rain tomorrow, then more seasonal temps for a few days, then back to the semi warm days. I hate this back and forth. Red maple firing away in the nc30.
Dropped to 25 overnight but already hit 33 for my walk today. Nice color of the sunrise. (you'll have to imagine it)
Stephiedoll sorry to hear of your bad luck. While running the splitter this fall, 99 and I had an eye opener when a piece shot out like there was no tomorrow! Didn't hit either of us, thankfully, but man if it had I would have beat you to reporting about it.
30 this morning when I got up and it reached 43 during the day so I've kept a slow burn going in the stove all day with silver maple and white birch. We had a rare day of sun so I took advantage of it and processed the last of the silver maple and beech from my scrounging forays last week. I also processed a white birch that came down in a windstorm a couple weeks ago (only about 20 feet from where the stacks are so convenient). Nothing fancy in the pictures but everyone always says "more pictures" so there you go. What I finished up processing almost got these two stacks to 5' high (which will be 1.25 cords apiece). This is all part of the 22-23 stash so the three-year plan is coming together. Just wanted to get this stuff finished up since we're supposed to get 3-4 inches of rain tomorrow evening into Tuesday (depending on who you listen to) with wind gusts over 60mph. Will definitely be out scrounging later in the week.
I've come close splitting knotty pine in the garage with an electric splitter. Took one either to the forehead or shoulder. Don't remember now. Developed a habit of keeping a hand between/on/over the split and my face ever since.
Yesterday my wife and I walked about the woods near our cabin and found plenty of solid ice on this bigger pond at the headwaters of a small river that runs into Lake Superior. This is about 2 miles inland from the big lake. Spent a few hours collecting a little shoulder season wood for next fall (birch and poplar). Stacks are sugar maple and birch.
On our hike we visited the remains of an old homestead. I had found this site about 25 years ago when we lived in the area, but hadn't visited it since then and wanted to share with my wife. hole/tree in the bucket.
Burning birch and red maple house is Chilly 66* inside been outside all day 3 cord on deck; flower gardens trimmed and driveway ready for rain snow!
