It keeps up pretty well down into the low teens, below that or add in much wind and it's a battle against coaling and I have to get up overnight to reload. The Oslo would be a better size, but it's not worth making a switch for those couple coldest days of the year. Still, it puts out a remarkable amount of heat for a smaller stove.
Looks like a good week for weather around here. Couple cold nights but no large amounts of snow. And no ice!
Doing the same thing with branch wood and yard fall that I had cut to length and "stacked" for the chiminea. Its mid thirties here so not so brutal but heating the house with stuff most people throw away.
The realfeel for Monday night is -31 and on Tuesday night -40, it looks like a couple of days of Beech & Ironwood.
I make my favorite cookies and I eat them all. I've even had them for breakfast when no one was looking. Lucky if they last 4 days.
Good. I hope it kills some E.A.B., ticks, and any other nasties around that we don't want. Come on cold! Hey. Next time your coming down to "The Burg" you stop and grab me a Sergi's pizza in Canton! Will ya?! I haven't had one in a while. Can ya tell? Maybe next weekend I will take the wife and kids over there for dinner. I have not taken them out in a while.
Made it up to 40 here, cut about half a pickup load of cherry this afternoon, was going to drop another one but the wind kicked up and we are supposed to get some nasty freezing rain/sleet so I thought I better get back home and top off the rack out back and some in the house. Dug out some silver maple for this evenings fire.
We're sitting at 22 degrees tonight so instead of the Beech going in, I'll put a load of Yellow Birch in. I'll save the Beech for Monday & Tuesday night.
Gasifier... Now I'm not getting alerts from this thread. A few cold nights ahead of us, I brought in enough wood for three or four days...mostly sugar, one or two splits of ash, ironwood. Have some ironwood logs on one rack in the house, been there since last year, and the remaining 35+ year old sugar fills and overflows the other rack. Having trouble getting myself to burn any of that......
forecast Well, looks like we fire up the 2nd stove again tonight.......... Mon 12 Jan 7°F* Tue 13 Jan 10°F -22°F Wed 14 Jan 14°F -11°F Thu 15 Jan 60% 18°F 3°F Fri 16 Jan 30% 28°F 14°F Sat 17 Jan 30% 21°F -4°F Sun 18 Jan 40% 28°F 21°F
Warm here now. Wish I could stay home and go out in the woods again. 29 out with Ash in the boiler. It is going to be a drop of at least 40º between now and the middle of the night tonight. Down to -10 they say.
It's a strange thing. Fire gods not happy about something? Grizzly Adam wanting more time off and more beer? I don't know.....
Well last nights low was 32 degrees and woke up to a house that was still 76 on less than a full load. Put 4 splits of pine in this morning which should hold the house for pretty much the rest of the day.
Woke up to sleet and ice. Roads were salted except one that I drove 3 miles at 5mph! You never know which roads were treated and which weren't once I go through different townships. Made it to work safe, and if I hit ice sooner, I wood have turned around and went home until things defrosted. Anyway, temps around freezing mark, loaded stove with pin oak, house was warm. Back to the single digits tonight....
Holy chit Batman. Currently 14f here and now they are saying it is supposed to SLAM down to -26 tonight with a winchill of -34. That is not at all nice..............................
