11 here, burning coals before loading more Sugar and ash. Took about 8" of snow overnight.. It was a fun 180 miles to today's work site. They got less snow there though, so it was fine. I Tomorrow's commute is a paltry dozen miles. I look forward to filling out my mileage report.
Found out that 3 miles down the road this morning they had -20. With the wind, it bottomed out at -36!
Down to about 15 tonight. We burn steady Thursday through Monday night. Went through the Thursday evening ritual of staring the fire with some sugar maple, cherry and a nice glass of Evan Williams.
Warmed up nicely today, cools of quickly without clouds. Adopted some birch after work today and have more than a cord ready to bring home.
Its a mild -6c/21f at the moment, larch and doug fir in the box for the overnight burn. It was nice to have a few days of warmer weather but we will be right back in the cold starting later tomorrow. It figures it will get cold for the weekend. I have an ice fishing trip planned for Sunday and a smoked meat day on Saturday.
Loving the birch harvesting pics! I havent had any in a few years. Are they all standing dead or snags?
Youre not kidding on the short shelf life in the woods. I will even split the smaller rounds (or zip it with the chainsaw) as that bark will rot the goodness underneath. Birch will keep great for many years if taken care of. I have some out here but since we cant cut live trees and its not very prolific I dont go out of my way to search for it. Much of the stuff I run into is rotten when I get to it so I target larch which is just .5 mbtus below birch. Still, I have gotten lucky after wind storms or when BC Hydro is clearing the power line edges. We love keeping the bark of birch so that the kids can play with it in the fire pits during the summer. Its neat how it curls up and can make a fun torch when it wraps around a stick while burning.
Seems most of this has come down in the last two years. I test the trees by chopping them with a ax. Solid ones I cut, the soft ones I leave. I am splitting every piece I bring home. I got lucky stumbling across these.
27 here this AM and some snowfall overnight about 2" or so, sure does look pretty! 71 inside and a fresh load of pine scraps in hole.....TGIF Hoarders!
26*-69*....oak again.....got 4 "s of that white stuff last night....1 more month...1 more month......
Another cool morning. -10 here. I wonder how cold it is at that spot 3 miles away? Had some nice sun yesterday; highways are clearing up real nice.
17°, headed to the low 30's, today I've got to get wood out of the driveway, before snow on both Saturday and Monday. Same days that dishwasher delivery/removal and installation are scheduled in the rental. Ugh. Still chomping away at the oak still in the basement. The weather guy I follow says above average precipitation for March.
