Does more wood in the burner make for higher temps? That grandpa as you call it holds twice what my little burner does. I could use that for less frequent midnight runs to stoke up...been getting up 4 times a night...

Do you have power out there WS?
If you do, get a heated bowl. Takes VERY LITTLE power to keep it from freezing. I was trying to get power out to ours, but didn't quite get that far, so wife ran an extension cord to the coop from the outlet on the back of the house.

My wife has one in the bird bath. Birds seem to love being able to get a drink.

What a sloppy mess. Just finished plowing the driveways for the first time this winter. We got snow then rain. Was misting rain all the time I was out there. Wanted to move that mess off the driveways before it froze tonight else it would be a worse mess.

Now we'll prepare for another shot of cold.

Currently about 23 F. Pine in the boiler. We have received a few more inches of snow today. 2-3? So far. Schools closed early for the freezing rain they think will be here soon. I’m going to wait until all the precipitation is over to clean things up.

Snowed starting yesterday afternoon, and just now stopping. Still only got about 6". Looks like the tail end of the storm will hit again (maybe), then be gone in a while.
Forecast went from 6-10, then 8-12, then back to 6-10, and finally down to 4-8".
Just saw that Detroit Metro Airport closed. WooHoo.

Just killed my second row of wood. Each row was just a little over a cord. Not bad.

Been a long nasty day here. Plowed 3" of slop off parking lot, fixed cars, trucks, & snowplows. Spent an hour shoveling wet heavy snow off my lean too roof before it froze. That was really pleasant out in the rain. Re plowed parking lot to get as much off as I could. Temp is now 31F with a stiff North wind. Highest I saw was 41. Rain gauge shows 1.17" of liquid precip. Puddles everywhere it can't run off. Not gonna be nice when it freezes hard. Cherry & Elm in the boiler.
Midwinter , so glad to hear your hubby was not injured!

Its going to be 50* over night and raining. I just cleaned the stove up and will enjoy sleeping in sweats with the two heat pumps running tonight. Back to 20’s tomorrow night, and teens this weekend.

Extension cord for now with a home made setup. Works well unless I forget to plug it in!
