You know what else is fun about pine? The looks and comments when you tell the people you work with that you are heating your house by burning pine in your wood stove while getting 8-10 hour burns in 15 degree weather . I especially like the you are going to burn your house down and kill your family comments.

Somehow ran into a single chunk of basswood in my pile of hardmaple this morning on reload.
Little Englander is really struggling to keep temps up in this weather. New chimney being made for the big gun . Won't be ready for a week or 2 yet. Will have to burn a little 'pane to keep up.

27* outside, 69* inside after overnight burn. Had a nice bed of coals for an easy restart.

Ya, right at 27º here as well. The large Ash and Pine splits with a few large Ash Uglies worked great overnight. Must still be enough to keep the boiler warm because it is not running right now. Looks like we got another inch of snow overnight. Hmm. I wasn't expecting that.

No snow here so far. We had a dusting last week but that was it. I couldnt imagine living up in NW NY and getting 5ft in 36hrs!
I still have to bring the tractor home and get the chains on the tires. I gave my dad my snow blower since I used the tractor and a 6' scraper blade for snow removal last winter.

What kind of tractor do you have? Where did you get your chains?

1977 Kubota L225 diesel 2wd w turf tires. I picked up chains on Craigslist that were for a Farmall (if I remember correctly). They're a little big but I used a tie down strap to tighten them to the tire. It worked fine last winter and really made a difference.

Of course the one picture I have of the tractor in the snow doesnt have the tire chains
I'm also using a 3pt Carry All attachment instead of the yard cart now.

Edit: Found a pic of chains on the tractor and the carry all!

Was not supposed to snow last night...and according to environment Canada and accuweather it didn't. Unfortunately, my property doesn't know about that...went to take the dog out at 6:30, and the snow was over my steps...more than 6 inches there, in a windswept area. Seems to be a bit more on the ground......got the cars in all the wrong places if the snowplow comes.....
And, I see the forecast is changed so temps in the 50's with rain on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday...actually, Tuesday going down to 37 with snow/rain......such delightful weather

But very grateful I'm not somewhere south of Buffalo...

Scary thinking about what January may be like......

It is currently about 26 deg. Suppose to go to about 18 overnight. Currently burning through some Ash and Pine splits and one big Maple split with a knot and crotch in it. One of dem difficult shaped ones. Still burns good though!

Hmmm. About 15 this morning. The boiler was empty too! Still had some red hot coals going though. A bunch of large Ash splits are on the job now.

17 degrees this morning, room temperature was 67 when I got up after a 9 hour burn on ash and oak. Nice bed of coals, and the Jotul is already almost to shut-down temperature.

Low 20's this morning. Woke up to the best coal bed I've had yet.. Tossed on a big split of ash and it took right off..
