Cold start quad tips please.

I win, post #4, weak battery. Will it start depends on your temps tomorrow. I'll roll the dice with my lucky streak and say yes.

 

You're on fire. It started up again this morning


Now I'm wondering if I should take the quad out to the farm. If it goes, it stays until fall and changing a battery out there wouldn't be fun

 

Solar powered battery maintainer. (assuming there is no power there)
Or go ahead and put a new battery in it now.
Even if you have to put a new battery in it out there, should be just a matter of a 10mm wrench and maybe a screwdriver...couple minutes.
Oh, and just FYI...you know about the backup pull starter? Its on the back of the engine...IIRC you have to pop a side cover off to access it...I'm pretty sure those were standard equipment...not optional...

 

I have an 01 450 and if it sits a while and I need it to start I use the pull starter. Fires on the first pull pretty much every time I have had to use it.

Killed the old battery this winter so I got a new one and a battery tender JR for it. Hopefully won’t need the pull starter for a while

 

Carbs are typically set lean on 4 strokes to make less emissions. There's ways to easily fix that. Raising the needle with a shim will fatten the mixture up and give it more power, and warm up quicker. Yes, it will use a tad more fuel, but overall running quality will be much better.

I recently installed a chinese copy of the original kehein carb on my 300 bayou. The honda Chinese copy ( with the primer) had a bad needle and seat so it was cheaper to simply get a new carb. That new carb is so much leaner that a shim really helped it to warm up almost as good as the old Honda carb did. I never did use that primer on the old carb. It just wasn't necessary.

 

Yes, battery tenders and similar trickle chargers work great. They just take a while. Now, these small batteries don't take too well to higher amperage charge rates designed for bigger batteries like car batteries.

 

X10 to battery tenders for equipment not often used. I have bought a couple of them and totally worth the $30 or so.

 

Update #3...had a cold Saturday night. Sunday morning, fired up the quad...no problem. Fired up. It hasn't been on the battery tender since Friday and choke was not pulled.
