I'm hearing wind chills of -40 but I haven't figured out what day they're talking about. Friday night temps of -20. I'm actually thinking about giving up my stubbornness and buying some decent pellets. Are LaCrete any good? Or Crabbe's?

There were some flurries flying around about an hour ago but it has subsided. I think it was a warning shot in advance of whats to come tomorrow. I am not looking forward to driving 50 miles each way tomorrow in my small Lancer.

I think Friday night and Saterday are supposed to be the coldest and windy. Not going to be fun snow cleanup.

No experience with Crabbe but members here like them. Hoot is using Lacrete from last year and loves them-says they are hot and clean, almost no ash. Friend of mine is using Lacrete from this year in her XXV. Loves the high heat but says they make the inside walls black..although I think she needs door gasket replaced and that might be part of the issue.

Have you seen American Wood Fiber at HD? Supposed to be the best of the area at big box.

The only thing the big boxes have up here are MWP, Maine Choice, Nature's Own, Green Supreme, Greene Team at their lofty price and FSU at the beginning of the year. I'm thinking of picking up 5-10 bags of Lacrete from my stove dealer.

The black in the stove is probably a gasket issue. I'm having the same issue, but I think my problem is from either air blockage in the stove or a tired combustion blower. I had my door gasket replaced last summer.

Tomorrow night AccuWeather has the realfeel for us @ -48, the wood stove is in one corner and the pellet stove is in the opposite corner.

Beech in the wood stove and Curran Hardwood Pellets going in the opposite corner.

The MWP softies I paid $235 delivered last year, so it was worth the gamble. This year they were $250 plus delivery. Not worth the money for me and other's as well. They don't stack up to the good ones . They aren't than much better than the MWP blend. I haven't tried any other Maine made softies.

The only things good about winter is no humidity and no bugs. Period.

    Hey Dex

Most people have a TV to watch when on the treadmill. Looks like you have wood porn- woodpile and a firing stove :D. True Firewood Hoarder for sure :)

Let me know how you make out on those Lacrete. She LOVES the heat.

The North Country I am burning this year are doing the job very well for me. My dealer has stopped using them until they get their process dialed in. Says that he is getting complaints of fines and small broken pieces. That being said we both know that that does not bother our stoves-they burn hot and are a bit ashier than they can be but the firebox cleans up with a quick swipe of a paint brush and we have a huge ash pan. One of the easiest pellets I have used in regards to cleaning plus great heat.

Ready to go. My sister and mom are here from VA, so they are getting the full experience. Cold and snow. LaCretes are burning great.

We hit - 30 with the wind chill, the lowest I see is -40 in Massena and a few other places.

Windchill is suppose to be -24 here Friday night... The Progress Hybrid will do it's job along with the Esse Cookstove doing double duty, cooking and heating... Suppose to get up to 15 inches ..Still a small storm in my eyes... As I kid average storms were 12-18"... big were over 24"....how the weather has changed looking back at the 1960's.

Took an hour last night to rearrange the stacks so I could get at the Cubies! They will be going in the hopper for the next couple a days. I heard bear's voice in my head as I left home this morning. So I'll be stopping for gas-brew on my way home. Wifey made a short list and will be stopping for food.

    Stay warm my friends!!
