Sadly these happen far more often than is reasonable.

If it's the smoke sniffer it's an easy call, no smoke smell, just step on the thing and trash it.
The CO sniffer is far more difficult to verify if there is an issue in many cases.

With your situation it was pretty simple.

    With ours it was sketchy.

One stove had been running 24/7 so there was reason for concern.

Sadly these are electronic devices that are fairly complex and do have a finite life span.
They are effected by, or can be effected by dust (We have plenty)

    A necessary evil me thinks.

The first thought would be to get the highest quality unit that you can, but these too are still electronic devices that can and do fail, ahhh at 3 AM

I just replaced the little devil with a newest version of the same thing.

First Alert with no frills unit.

I am thinking about getting one that will interface with our alarm system as does our smoke alarm.

Ahhh well, just another day at the office eh

About a year ago I had recently moved into my house. I was dog sitting for a friend of mine, and in the middle of the night, my CO/Smoke detector goes off right outside the bedroom door. The dog freaks out (100 # golden retriever), I freak out because it is dark in a house I have been in for a few weeks and I have some big animal/person/bigfoot unknown thing in my bedroom thrashing around. Make it to the light switch, remember I am dog sitting as he is pacing around the room and go and grab the detector off the ceiling. Walk around the house, look at the stove in the basement (detector 3 feet from it is not going off) and go back upstairs to calm the dog down.
I start screwing with the batteries and out of the side of the detector a little little spider crawl out. I could not believe that it set the alarm off, but that was it. Killed it, went back to bed and had a 100# lap dog shaking next to me the rest of the night in bed.

Woke up this morning around 4am to a faint chirping noise. Being half awake, I thought chipmunk or some small rodent in the house but one of the cats was sleeping away next to me. I got up to go the bathroom and it was much louder in the hallway-yup CO detector battery on the first floor. Unplugged the wiring harness, removed the detector and the battery and went back to bed.

I think its time to replace my 3 detectors as one is over ten years old and the other to are about 15 years. From what I understand they should be replaced every 10 years?

At least it wasnt a chipmunk in the house

My kind of dog. a life saver! you couldn't sleep through that.

Look on the back of the detector. Should have the dates right on it.

I have one of those, 65lb wirehaired viszla, same thing. She will actually try to crawl into my lap when I am up on a high stool. No fun for the dog or us.
