I think each town is different unless your in the Adirondack Park, then you better have one. Some towns don't really care until something happens.
In Maine, most towns require a permit after snow leaves. I keep a "really big" rock fire pit that I burn in. Always have a hose beside the pit. I don't ask about a burn permit, tho I know it must be quite a sight when I've had "3 foot" flames a few times… prolly looks like the back of the garage is on fire….
Wow. Did I make a lot of work for myself. Moved a lot more branches today. I think I have about 90% of them piled. Probably 75% of them will be burned. I made two piles in the trees that I will leave as cover for the animals. Rabbits love them. Trimmed up some branches and made two areas so the pulling distance would be shorter that way. Going to rain tomorrow night and would be good for burning. Unfortunately I have to work. Ugh. Don't know if I will get home in time to light them off before they are too wet. Would be perfect for burning if I did. Snow still on the ground and raining.
Tarp em. Get it ready to burn with lots of dry stuff under it… pull the tarp & touch her off. It might get hot enough with all those pine boughs to keep going… I do the same thing Gas. I burn any open piles when there's a drizzle or at least damp conditions. Good job today. Good luck burning… pics?
I don't have a tarp big enough for one of the piles. LOL There is Pine (long standing dead and recently cut), Ash saplings, vines and brush. It will get hot enough and keep going. Just depends if I can be there at the right time when it rains some night. Going to rain tonight, but I don't know if I will be there at the right time.
You may see a mild "glow" from there. If you don't need your marshmallows burned, you may try holding them out off of your porch with a real long stick. I'll let you know when.
I thought about burning on Sunday but everything (most) wood that's down around the house is still frozen in. When you decide to burn PM me, I'll turn the scanner on!

Still snow in that area. I started cutting the sapling stumps down to the ground the other day. I would not hesitate to say that there must be several hundred saplings that I cut in these two areas I trimmed up and took several trees out of. I would say it is about the size of, oh, a 1/4 of a football field maybe. It is going to be some serious work with the chainsaw and my back! I have a strange feeling I will go through a few chains. The chain, she no like-a the ground and a rocks. Eh. I need to get them all cut down as flat as I can with the ground as I can so they won't hurt the tractor tires. UGH!
A big weed whacker brush cutter with a carbide blade, might be better on the back ,and save your chains, probably rent one if you don't have one
