I spent alot of time at Holiday Sands and the Silver Spur in Ravenna. My uncle Bob had a car dealership in Blackhorse.
I went to school here and the building still stands! The fellow who owns it is an old friend as he and I are the same age and used to hang out together until we both found some pretty girls and married them. He built a house right next to the old school. Too bad I didn't get a shot of the old outhouse as it still stands behind that old building out back. I have many not so fond memories of that place. Especially the cold. We had to start a fire in the big old stove that sat just inside the door every morning and it took all day to get much heat in that old crate. We were happy when they closed it and rather than walk the 1 3/4 mile to school, we got to actually ride a bus that picked us up right at the end of our driveway. What a luxury!
I think I have a picture somewhere of the rocket ship on that playground in Texarkana, lived in Idabel Ok. when I was 5 yrs. old we went to Texarkana a lot. youngest sister was born there
Well, I finally figured out what this building was, a Stckeys restaurant/fuel station, I still need to find out more info on this particular one, here's a pic of another one from a different location, some how the Stuckeys restaurants slipped my mind, I guess I'm just getting too old....
Seems to me I remember these also. Was back in the mid-70s that the traditional trip included a route along the south western states; probably thats when I visited one? Yes, pecan log roll!!! Stuckey's on The Mother Road and Beyond
This one is famous in Maine. The funny thing is my wife went to all the fancy bridal shops and they would not give her the time of day, finally went to Hussey's and the ladies there treated her like a queen and that is where she ended up getting her wedding dress!
Thanks for sharing and great story about your wife, this sign was also mentioned in post #69 so it must be the "go to" place in Maine!......
No biggie, glad to see more on the thread, my parents used to live in Wintrop and I know some of the area surrounding it, I think Hussey's was farther east.....
Found a few pics from a blog site that were posted by a somewhat local gent of the former Stuckey's that I had mentioned previously, kinda nice to know that there's others that share my love of these old buildings......this one I had stopped in for a soda my years ago, it was located along my route going to the Allegheny forest in western PA., I need to get back over there someday.....
I used to travel to Warren OH every three months and took this pic on 422 (I think) - NE Ohio you near this? Savemoney - the Reds Eats is iconic - when us flatlanders from CT were up there to race at Wiscasset with modified we had to stop. Was a rain out first trip - won on return trip - passed leader with 2 to go - was happy 5 + hr ride home..sorry was listening to Bruce Springsteen glory days and kept typing...I digress.. Happy Friday All.
