For most weekend burners that's a year of burning! What if it's just one fire that doesn't go out all season? Obviously bad advice from that sweep.

Back in business. I cleaned the glass with a spackle knife and some ammonia free glass cleaner. Got it mostly clean.

He may have been trying to get you on an every 6-8 week cleaning, can't blame him for trying. That said between your previous burning and this new set up I agree with your sched. I wonder though if a different cap or burning tips from others here may help keep your draft from slowing again?

I think the key is to get up there at least twice a season to clean that cap. While up there, put the brushes down too. This is night and day. Lesson learned

You hook them up with some of your Oak?
If so then a 3rd year of drying will probably eliminate the screen clogging...it certainly burns hotter after 3 yrs CSS'd.

All of it was cut and split this past may thru July...mostly white, red oak and some mulberry. I'm ordering the brushes soon to have ready. I do have a 6 inch stainless liner so there is very little major chimney fire risk, but this is so easy to work with now that it's clean and smoke can flow out. All the wood I burn next season will be closer to 2 years. I'm going to be adding 3 or 4btrailer loads this summer at 5500 pounds per load.

I'd cut the wire mesh out if the cap if it has it. I also heard you can burn beer cans and potato skins to remove creasote.

    Insulated?
If so then I'd agree, low fire risk.
Insulated will tend to stay cleaner too.

Chimney fire danger has a lot to do with what comes out the top and lands on your roof shingles... !

Cut the screen. Potato peels and cans won't do anything. Burn dry wood and keep the flue warm enough.

Is that mesh what keeps sparks from landing on roof?

I don't know if insulated. I just mean smoke is not going up a normal chimney with mortar getting gunked by creosote

Husband does roofs. He became friends with a business acquaintance. He did a personal roof on that man's house and sadly passed away a couple years later. His widow called my husband because the roof was leaking. He got up there and it was all melted from creosote overflow melting the newer shingles from a chimney fire. Versed her and the son (though he's over the hill too now) on dry wood and sweeping the chimney. Spooky stuff!

It won't do that when you have a chimney fire pushing flaming debris out like a locomotive...

There's no need to "get up there."

No, they have their own stacks. Here lately he’s been into some ash, walnut and cherry. I’m going over there tomorrow night, I’ll take my MM along and split a few random pieces for chits and giggles. He told me when he peaked down the liner he could see silver.

Like many other on this forum I also clean from the bottom up. Plastic over the firebox and a shop vac with a HEPA filter bag makes sure zero dust gets into the house. Can I post a video?

You need a you tube account or send your vid to someone on here with a you tube, rumble, the book of faces, toc tik or some other such account. they can post it.
Or at least that has been my experience
