Saw a good YouTube video where they put them in a I think a half gallon plastic milk Jug upside down with the top cot off to sort of make a funnel and hold them there. Looked like a handy way to do it
When i had mine and some roosters always had to go this time of year. I would grab them by the feet take the kindling hatchet and on a nice big round or Oak let them have it. then I would hold them to the ground until they stopped moving then I hung them up to bleed out. Then the hot water and start ripping the feathers off. Sharp hatchet and sharp knife. I used to leave the most calm rooster for fertilizing my eggs. My second grade teacher wife always hatched chicks for her kids in the spring. i have seen the YouTube video and if I was still butchering ou chickens I would give that a try. If you got a teenage son make sure he is around.
Well all I've caught is the neighbors stray cat three times now. I don't think it was the culprit.... Nothing on game camera... The mystery continues....
I know my have a heart trap was trashed this morning, I'll have to rerig the internal wires. One other coon on camera was walking away and as I was walking to check the trashed trap there was a set of coon eyes down at the base of the hill on my wood pile... So there is at least one more... I'll keep picking them off...
I rebuilt the cage with bailing wire every couple of squares... Made it pretty darn rigid. Well a big Sow got caught lastnight....
I had a fox kill off some of my chickens, I rebuilt the run with poultry wire. Havent had any issues yet. All chickens are now laying. i get on average a dozen eggs daily. mostly give them a way to friends and neighbors.
Dig up this old thread. First winter with our chickens. We have still been getting a decent number of eggs. But if you don’t get them pretty quick right now they freeze. What, if anything can that hurt? Obviously if they crack open then we are tossing them but if the shell is intact is it okay to use them if they have frozen? Just let them thaw ?
I have to say one of my favorite quotes I've ever heard was fox9988 talking about his daughter taming the ornery rooster.
Nope. Should I? Just wondering if they are okay to eat. Does it change anything? Can we just let them thaw on counter and then stick them in the fridge?
You should be able to use them. Just use normal salmonella prevention procedures.. Thaw em in the fridge to keep em cool.
Here's some interesting reading......Lots of ideas on cleaning or not and same for freezing. Cleaning and storing fresh eggs
I wish I had an intelligent answer. For us, we have a gross excess of eggs, so when in doubt we recycle them to the chickens.
