We did this last year. 12 eggs. 6 hatched. 5 roosters. The roosters ended up in chicken soup.

In 40 years of keeping hens I've had just one, sometime in the last 20 years. Pretty nifty you got to experience it.

In 4 years, this is the first broody hen that has stayed with the clutch of eggs. I marked 5 of them 2 weeks ago, and there's a few more under her but I will not interfere. If they are fertile and everything goes well I should have some new chick's at the end of the month. I have a young roster who's been keeping busy with the ladies. Fingers crossed!

The hen is still sitting on the eggs. Shouldn't be long here a week or two that I should hear peeps (if these eggs were fertilized) I want to candle them but also don't want to interfere, so probably tonight after sundown would be best.

Gonna hit the feed store as well, gonna pickup some chick starter (which the mother will eat as well since she won't be laying after the chick's are hatched)

Edit: Momma hen looks a little rough this morning. Broody hens typically only leave once a day to eat drink and poo

Hello - I posted this over in DIY room. Was suggested to post over here - I didn't see how to 'move' it. Appreciate any advice and I appologize for the same post in two forums. Thank you......

Hello. I live in the country. Have had chickens for 5 years and never had a problem...yeah, I got one now though. I only keep about 5 hens at a time and never had any problems with predators. Well, that's the past! A weasel cleaned out my birds!

My chicken run was fenced on all sides with chain link fence, was worried about coyotes in my area.

I want to upgrade my fencing...but how small of fence do I go with to keep weasels out? the average opening of chicken wire doesn't seem small enough?

Also, I just started building 'weasel boxes'.

Better fencing and and weasel boxes - that's my plan...very open to other ideas too!

    Thank you.

Hardware cloth like I mentioned in that thread will do the trick. Just need to bury it down and out for the digging predators. Weasels can squeeze through some very small areas but not hardware cloth

The fence is cool. Are the rails tied together?

I had him drill through the logs 6" from the ends, and then run a piece of 3/8" rebar down all the way through.
Then the whole thing is wired to the t-posts.

I'd say she'll have chicks under her in a couple days. Chicken eggs take 21 days to hatch but that depends on how close to 100 degrees they are under her. It could be a few days later or right on time. If there were eggs being laid in her nest when she was already setting she might well keep sitting until they hatch if you take away the first hatchlings. Keep us posted, please!

Sorry about your chickens. My pre-fab coop is hardware cloth too.
