    The first of many future attacks happened this evening, but the targeted hen luckily got away. I heard it while finishing up dinner but didn't see what was going after her..... probably a fox. I thought it got one from the amount of feathers everywhere, but she ran into the pole barn and i didn't know. Not soon after, she comes out feathers falling off her but no blood. Lucky girl!

    On another note.......

    The duckings continue to grow really fast. It was warm enough today to let them graze in the grass, but the water bowl soon became the main attraction. I put them into a net fence which worked so so keeping them in.

    These ducklings are a handful! I knew they were messy with the water but not to this extant! Won't be long until they transition into the coop full time.

    I've only got the two chicks but am in the same boat, I already want them to move out because they are growing so fast and quickly outgrowing the bin they are in, they look cramped. Soon as that lid comes off to clean, change food/water, they are like a missle outta there. We let them out as much as possible to handle them and play with them but they are little poop machines. I also built them a little pen outside with some scraps from the pole barn that I'll start keeping them in once the weather breaks.

    The chicks arrived today. All of them were alive. Half true blues and greens and then half barred rock cockerals that will be meat birds.

    I spent a few hours this afternoon blocking off an area inside the coop to put the ducks in. The adults chickens could potentially kill them, so that's why i did that. They will stay in there at least a week between coming outside with supervision. They aren't feathered in yet, so the heat lamp will be on since we're still mid 30s at night.

    The chickens still have some floor space, their roosting bars and 2 out of 5 nesting boxes and access to the auto door into the run area.

    Hard to tell from the picture. Starting to build a 3rd coop in a barn lean-to. With current price of lumber we are using pallets and old barn tin for the new walls. IMG_20210501_190652334.jpg

    Coop 2 built last year. Next to coop 1 that became nesting box and brooding area.

    Nesting boxes are old kitchen cabinets. Base board for a lip and old doors on top to keep birds from roosting. Need to add landing boards to top row

    Will that be your method of getting them out of the pond and back into captivity? Otherwise it will be a challenge to get them out.

    I dunno yet. I'm thinking (and some research I've done) that once they know the coop is home, they should head back up like the chickens do at dusk. Their first night in the coop was last night. There is a ramp that does down into the run, which i thought they would navigate ok, but they took a few steps and fell off onto the hay. I'm hoping they learn to stay on the ramp to get down.

    "Rain barrels"
    2 trash cans painted black. In the winter, they absorb heat from the sun and keep the greenhouse warm. We had a few hard freezes but for 3 seasons, it does pretty well. I have some tubing running into there. On the roof, there is a gutter of sorts that will collect water and drain to the barrels. I only have a little less than half of the roof with gutters and the barrels are always full.
    They make store-bought rain barrels with special intakes and stuff. Those were way more than i was interested in spending so I got some trash cans.
    The greenhouse is usually extremely warm in the summer so I leave the door open so it vents.
