    Got the nesting boxes built and added a poop shelf below the highest roost. Keeping the nesting boxes blocked off for now.

    We've successfully got the younger birds introduced to the others, not much squabbling. The younger birds will not go into the coop at night though, they just kinda hunker down in the dirt of the run. Mrs DG goes out before bed and puts them in and they stay in for the rest of the night.

    Looking gooder Dave. Good thinking bringing the pullets in at night. It was still cool enough when i put my girls in the coop for the first time... and i left them in the cool a few days. It's supposed to help teach them at first where home is.

    Your girls will will likely sleep opposite directions on the roost. When they are older, bedtime pecking order is a nightly thing. They can make all sorts of noises during this period. :)

    Depending on the breed i hear.... when will you be expecting your first eggs? When it happens it's a good day! My first one was pretty little. :D

    I think we have 6 different breeds and it's looking more every day like 4 roosters. One brown red Ameraucana hen, she is my favorite, very nice looking bird. So far the roosters are getting along ok but we'll see what happens when they start doing their rooster thing, which I believe started yesterday.:banana:

    We have 5 Barred Rock hens, which have been known to lay as early as 14 weeks, they are in week 15 right now. The plan was to wait until we found an egg and then open up the boxes and put the egg in one of the boxes. Sound good?

    I'd crack the egg into a puddle of melted butter.. But, what do I know. Someone has to do QC. It's tough job, don't you know.

    Your cockerals will likely fight pretty good. I forget the ratio from how many hens per rooster.

    Yes whether putting a real or painted ceramic egg in there will help them figure out where to go. It's great when they all lay in their nesting boxes. Your find them all over though at times and get a good chuckle... like under an atv or something.

    When they are laying keeping oyster shells available will help keep their calcium levels up and deter them from eating their own eggs. This can become a problem down the road. Theye had issues then Dawn eventually put curtains outside their nesting boxes lol. If they are naughty... i call em yolk heads. The evidence is always on their heads lol

    Thanks. Had to make due with the unavailability of a lot of PT lumber in common sizes and plywood. This is the current situation at the local Lowes.

    Logging wasn't t an essential business, so it is in short supply. Same situation at the HD & Lowe's in the Capitol city of NH. HD has signs at the beginning of the aisle basically saying there is a shortage and it's not their fault the shelves are bare. Know someone who works for HD in NY state and she sent pictures of a completely barren aisle - with no known re-stocking date.
