Well...The new girls are finally starting to lay.... Not sure what exactly happened... Late bloomers? The stars and moon didn't line up... They were hatched around March 10 (last year) and should have been laying by mid to late summer as I've had in the past... Had a few here and there in late fall through winter... But in the last two weeks...Production has bloomed...

We have 7 young ones that were born around Oct 1. I'm hoping they will start laying this spring. Do you think the weather is responsible for the delay in your case? Good to hear they are laying now!

Breed has everything to do with age when they start laying. Heavier birds take longer to mature so a Wynadotte takes longer than a Leghorn. I put lights on the younger ladies to bring them into lay a bit earlier but it's not unheard of to take 7 months . You probably knew all of this...

Well I went to local feed store and couldn't resist...
Ok I lie, I knew they were getting chicks in today. I was first in the door.
I got 3 silver laced wyndottes in the morning before work.
On the way home from work I stopped again. And somehow
buff orpington and an ameraucana seemed to make their way home with me. :emb:

The ameraucana is probably an "Easter Egger" and not a true one.

I can't believe it is chick season already. We are having a long wet winter here. You got a nice mix of chicks there! Orpingtons are my current favorite. They have a nice manner and personality.

Very true! Except the picture made me chuckle, not sure the brick and dust pan will hold up when a breeze picks up.

I had that same thought. "I wonder if that dust pan is structural?"

It's hard to describe but our Orpingtons are just sweet birds. They like people, we can pick them up, they are good egg producers. Not as much chicken drama.

Yeah, I like having a mixture of in the flock. Not sure why. I'm staying away from the more assertive and agressive breeds. I should have gotten another orpington or 2. I was thinking about getting a couple buff brahmas on Thursday, but now I have second thoughts because of their feathered feet and possible issues with mud caking, or ice and frostbite in the winter. Plus I may have to live in the coop after my wife finds out. :heidi:

Was this from a young chick? One of first eggs?
