Have had a small chest for 15 years. Just bought an upright and will never buy another chest again.
Chest is a Kelvinator about 15 years old. Still works well but is going down the road while I can still get a few bucks out of it.
Upright is a 19.3 cu ft Kenmore. This thing is huge. Energy guide sticker sez it cost $56/year to run @ 10.65 cents/KWH. Last I looked ours is around 8.
The ease of access is great. Open the door a grab. The chest was open the door and dig for 5 minutes. National Grid has a $50 rebate program for replacing an old frig or freezer.

I saw the slickdeals ad, but after this post I am sold on an upright.

There seem to be quite a few on CL, look to be in excellent condition for $200 for "Imperial". Anyone have experience with that brand? Looks good, but I have no idea.

Great advice, it also helps keep things frozen for a bit during a power outage. A local farmer taught me that trick.

X whatever on upright over chest-much easier to get to everything and you dont lose things on the bottom.

Dont get frost free if storing meat. That process quickens freezer burn. I have had fresh red meat from a local farm last a year easily in mine.

I have a chest freezer got it used 8 years ago - the $100 I paid for it was a good deal. If it ever fails will be replaced with an upright.

With kids they won't be able to find/reach anything in a chest freezer.

Its nice buying meat on sale - remembering to take it out for a meal is a different story
