Its not "new" but I should receive via Post Office this afternoon a very strong running & cosmetically good Mac 1-85 gear drive monster - 95cc/5.8 cubic inches of torquey badness. Scarce model, just produced from March 1961 to April 1962.Kind of an oddball, very similar design to their other more common 80 & 87cc gear drives sold a few years before plus the 99 & 103cc ones sold after, but not many parts on the 1-85 fit those other models. Almost like the 1-85 was a prototype or experimental model somewhat. They also had a scarce 1-86 gear drive a few months later - it was 99cc & by 1964 was revamped as the 840 with a few more added features. This replaces my rough looking seized 1-85 parts donor. Now I'll have a runner & the donor will be put away in storage
Good catch! One pic it looks like there is a baffle and the other it's not there? What is that. Got me wondering?
Maybe you can flip the baffle up and down? But it's not a spark arrested unless it's been pulled so I don't see the point to that?
According to the factory literature its the "Town & Country" muffler, basically LOUD & LOUDER with the turn of a screw.... Don't recall seeing it on anything made before or after this model.I think it was maybe available by itself to retrofit other models though.
I guess folks would know enough to tune the carb? But I guess if you have a pro saw that size you know what your doing.
That is a sweet saw Thistle!! Love the baffle on the exhaust! Running in a dry forest? Run the baffle. Running in your backyard? Don't run the baffle!! Exactly!! If you were running these saws back then? And didn't know how to tune? Then you shouldn't be running these saws.. And a right hand/PTO side recoil! Looks sweet!!
Back in the day? That was considered a baffle/arrestor. May not comply with today's standards. But even loggers back then new less restrictions meant more power! But a dry forest was a dangerous forest! So even they played it safe. Better to harvest the product than burn it.
That's a shweet looking saw! Why do I torture myself looking through these pics??? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Dang dude. You show up to cut some wood, whip out the 394xp and the trees just give up and up root themselves into some easy cutting positions!! You da man.
