Here is a Monster of a saw!! Gonna go out back and buck up some Trees (er, I mean twigs ) For $80 its a good investment for the ATV. Member Swags gave me an ATV chainsaw holder. So it will be my ride along trail cleaner until the Spring GTG in Canton. Thanks Swags!!
Nowhere near the quantity that some here have, but here's my collection. The 290 is the 'go to' saw. The wood shark is my limbing saw. I paid around $80 for it 10 years ago. It's had nothing but a new bar, chains, gas, oil and an air filter. Just got the 3700 running again after sitting for many years.
What's up with that chain? I don't think I have ever seen one like that where in between the teeth they have those weird risers.
My 12 yo pole saw (Homelite) came with that style of chain. I donated it to the local saw shop who sells used chains from dead saws or he's sharpened & a year later haven't been picked up. Only time I saw that style of chain before. I wonder if it was a Homelite thing.
That's Oregon's version of a raised tie-strap chain. It made appearances on just about every manufacturers' saws. Stihl had a chain called PM1/RM2 that was similar in function but the raised tie-straps were triple humped instead of being smooth across the top. Looked cool, kinda, but cut like a turd. At least the safety chains that are out there today cut decent as long as the nose of the bar isn't buried.
The homelite rangers don't last long enough to have to sharpen the chain. I've got a bucket full of those chains from the 15 saws I used parts from to turn 'kickass' into a runner.
I bought my Ranger in 1999 from Home Depot. I was a new homeowner with a acre and a half of downed trees to clean up. That saw is still running today and was my only saw for about 10 years of 4 to 5 cords of firewood a year. Mine came with a modern low-kick back safety chain. Didn't cut fast but what did I know. It was faster than a hand saw. I've seen some units that had dull chains and were over-reved to death or the air filters were clogged and they were run rich and fried. The people that used them bought them in a box store. Like me, what did they know? At least I read the instructions. Main difference is that after the first few cuts I took off the "safe-t-tip" and figured how to use the file that came with it. KaptJaq
Had a couple mutts added to the stable yesterday... Yes... Stihls.... Shouldn't be around for long hopefully...
Na.. My neighbor was enamored with my ported 385, and would not take no for an answer... So he traded the 2 saws in the pic for my ugly old 385 with attitude... The 460 ain't too bad a runner... Vibrates a lot more than my other saws though.. Other than that, seems sturdy..
Only saw I've owned or needed for the last 35 year was this ole Husky. However, one of the muffler bolts broke on the Husky last time I was out cutting wood. I still managed to cut everything I fell, but decided it was time to pick up a spare saw. I have since replaced the bolt on the Husky.
