Well whats that hiding under there? This baby had an 1/8" or more baked on crud on the bottom. Worst I've ever seen... Been through 2 rounds of oven cleaner this week and look whats hidden under crud. I honestly thought it was an unmarked when i bought it at yard sale for $3
Wife started with a #6 Griswold from grandmother. The rest I bought in the last 6 months. I have chemically stripped and re-seasoned all the new to us cast iron. Sizes are 10, 8,8,7,6, and 3...about half Griswold, half Wagner. Plusthe Wagner fat free fryer that my 10 year cooks eggs on every day.
Nice to have you on this thread! Lots of "Great stuff" back a ways if you want to read some....... for a couple days.....
It's pretty simple. It's a 5 gallon cat litter bucket with water and 1 pound of lye dissolved in the water. Use some baling wire through the handle hole to pull the skillets from the bath and keep my fingers out of the solution. I wash and rinse the cast iron with water once a day to check on the build up removal. I think it allows the lye bath to last a bit longer because I remove alot of organics before it's dissolved and converted to a soap. I used to have a electrolytic rust removal tank but I trashed it several years ago. I need to build another. I have 3 more number 3 skillets stripped. Need to work on saving some skillets that got left outside. More rust removal than organic build up.
A quick restoration on a late 1960's BSR #3. Century line I believe it is called. I was able to get the angle grinder with wire wheel into the pan. The outside got the stand grinder with wire wheel. This one was not as bad as it looked.
They get looked over, so I get them cheap. When I had the mud oven at the last house, I could put several of the 3 or 5's in the oven with side dishes in them.
