Yes it is. If you have access to one then even I would try. Although, if a pan was greasy and cruddy I would de-grease it first. That's the nice thing about electrolysis, it'll do it all in one shot, rust, grease, paint, anything. It just takes time.

I have a full booth dedicated to plastic media blasting which with extremely light surface rust MIGHT work, but it will do nothing for pitted heavier rust scale.

Walnut also won't remove rust scale. If I get time at work today I'll give it a shot with plastic media and post pics.

Just finished the #3 Lodge with plastic media. Very surprised at how easily it came out. all the rust is gone and it looks pretty decent to me. This was less than 30 seconds worth of blast time. Before and after:

    Looks nice!
So plastic bead blasting does take off rust?

In this case yes, but in most cases what I use plastic media on like car bodies, no. Typically a car body though is going to have way heavier rust scale than what was on this pan. This was more of that residual type of rust that wasn't all that penetrated into the pan.

Will be washed and oiled ASAP! I'll keep my eye out for another "experiment" pan, I'd like to see how a heavily rusted one will do with the plastic bead.

Passed on this #9 slant logo Griswold today, sorta kicking myself now (it was about $40) but the pitting on the logo bugged me. Lots of heavier rust scale on it, but maybe I should've just bought it anyway. 20180221_170555.jpg

I've never seen the slant logo in person. I think I would have picked it up just because of the logo.

The pitting could be from being used on a coal stove. The caustic gases can do that. I would expect it it more widespread across the bottom. Nice pan though.

I believe with that logo and heat ring it dates between 1906-1929.

Someone told me a few weeks ago that the prices on cast iron were sliding a little.
Think there is any truth to that, Dave?

I really dont think antique places or Ebay'ers are going to drop their price unless the economy tanks or there's a nuclear war...
