I'm taking a peek at the subcompact M&P 9mm this afternoon. For my wife but you know how that goes. :D

Now that is the right wheel gun to have. It commands respect and puts the lead out there. Bulky though.

I'm really looking at the m&p, the walther ppx, and xdm in 40 s&w. I've got done time to think about which to get though. I like the back strap safety of the m&p.

M&P does not have a grip safety (back strap safety). The Xd does. For Walther, have a look at the PPQ, best trigger on polymer pistol.

Got it, I mixed them up.

I like the ppq, but I want a traditional trigger and more safety than the glock type trigger.

That's why it's hidden in the truck, too bulky for EDC, except maybe in the winter when it can go in a shoulder holster under a heavy coat.

I have the Ruger LCP in .380 in my wallet pocket at all times.

The Taurus 24/7 G2 9MM SS is very ambidextrous and may be the new leader. My brother has the single colour version and highly recommends it.

    Taurus makes some fine handguns.

Don't fear the Glock style safety trigger. They are very safe. However there is no substitute for the inherent safety we all have, and that is our brain. No firearm is any more dangerous than a chainsaw provided you follow the 4 rules of safety.

    • Treat every firearm as if it's loaded. ...
    • Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. ...
    • Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it. ...
    • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.

I've got an older Taurus pt-58. They do make decent firearms.

Check out the walther ccp too. It's got reversible ( ambidextrous) mag release as well. The price is right too.

Griz, it's tough to determine which gun to get. In in the same boat but for a full size gun. There's so many good ones out there. It may come down to who has the best deal at the time.

I've just read about to many accidental discharges from block owners, even police officers.

That said, I read a glowing review on the ppq. The ppx got a great review too, but is getting hard to find, and is less $ at 400 but bulkier then the ppq.

I need to test shoot a few, even some glocks to determine which I like.

I thought the ppq was the one I read about having an insanely hard tear down.

The CCP is the concealed carry pistol, is a little more difficult to tear down, but not bad.

I'm confusing this thread with my full size pistol thoughts.;)

Be sure to consider all aspects of your conceal carry pistol because it all matters. If it it too large or too small for comfort, you won't carry it regularly.
If it is difficult to tear down you wont care for it, and if not properly maintained it may fail you when you need it.
Consider more than just the price of the firearm. Look and see if holsters and accessories are readily available for the one you choose.
All this will make the choice a "custom-fit" for you :)

Smith and wesson sd 9ve. It's pretty much a glock copy. If your not skinny it will conceal fine in an inside the waistband holster. Glock 19/23 are also good choices, but more money. As for safeties..... You only need two; awareness and good holster. A mechanical safty is something you must practice with and master switching to the fire position. Good striker fired and double action pistols have multiple safeties built in. The gun won't fire in a holster. Glocks are popular for a reason and have been copied for those same reasons. They are easy to use and inherently very safe if you keep you finger off the trigger and keep the firearm in a holster every second you don't intend to fire it. If you buy a pistol with an external safety, practice, practice, practice, manipulating the safety.

One other thing to consider was recommended to me by a retired cop here: get a one or two million dollar umbrella insurance policy. They cover liability for you in case you shoot someone in a firefight, run someone over with your PU or car, or a tree on your property falls on them. Even if you shoot someone in self defense, anyone (yah, anyone) can sue you for their 'loss'. Even someone (as my retired cop friend puts it) that had not even met the person that you shot dead, but had intended to make his best friend for life (suing you for his future 'loss'). It gets that weird. Umbrella policies are pretty cheap, and cover clams over the limits of your homeowner/renter and auto policies. For me a one million policy is $10 a month. A two million dollar policy is $15 a month. Cheap as chips. They also pay for legal fees for defending you when being sued for liability, which can cost upward of $80,000 or even $100,000 per event.

If you shoot Eddie the Tweeker after entering your home with the intent of mayhem and threatening your wife and kids with a stiletto, you may have to then live through 3 months of Hell with a police investigation, a Grand Jury hearing, and then a lengthy liable suit by a herd of junkies with an army of free legal aid lawyers. At least with an umbrella policy you will not lose everything you have even if you survive the attack and you win in court. Of course you will never get the gun back after shooting someone either. But that will be the least of your worries.

I think life NRA members have legal protection, no? I'm a lifer, and am pretty sure I've seen coverage of some sort.
